Ah, the opening day of college basketball season, giving us such gems as:
James Madison 123, Valley Forge 38
Baylor 117, Mississippi Valley State 53
Oakland 90, Defiance 27 (in progress)
UMass Lowell 77, Fisher College 27 (in progress)

 

Thing I did not realize until reading it today - the NIT final four is no longer at MSG. Vegas this season, Indy in 2024 and who knows after that.

 

Hey, I'm surprised UMass Lowell can be up 50 on anyone, so good for them. Meanwhile, here I am watching URI's debut game under Archie Miller, and hoping they can beat Quinnipiac. (Our roster is pretty much gutted from the previous season, when we had talented knuckleheads that are now gone. Frustrating to watch the Mitchell twins play, yes, but they put up numbers.)

 

The people who run college athletics hate college athletes. This is just another example.

Leaving the WCC for either the Big 12 or Big East would negatively impact the lives of almost every GU athlete, with multiple, much longer road trips, time away from campus and school, etc. Obviously the AD doesn't care about that Thursday-Saturday soccer trip to West Virginia/Cincinnati instead of Santa Clara/USF or St. Mary's.

 

Not a ton to see last night other than a ranked TCU nearly losing to Arkansas-Pine Bluff, which has won exactly one non-conference game in the last four years. Lots of low majors beating the shit out of non-DIs, like Appalachian State dropping 142 on a dude named Warren Wilson. We did have two DIs lose such a matchup, though, with Northern Illinois dropping a game against Illinois-Springfield and Kansas City losing to Lincoln.

Temple losing at home to Wagner isn't a good look. Nor is Florida State losing by nine at home to Stetson. Or Oklahoma losing to Sam Houston. And Division I newbie Queens beats Marshall by a point at home in its debut.

Oh, and Andy Enfield welcomed his old Dunk City boys to L.A. and got thumped by 13.

 

And for women's basketball, Norfolk State 125, something called Virginia University of Lynchburg 19. It was 52-4 at the half. Virginia-Lynchburg had 8 players. Norfolk State had 8 players score in double figures.

 

Christ, imagine being the rent-a-victim for MEAC women’s basketball.

 

Gwen and I went to see the local NAIA Christian school last night. Entertaining for $7 each but honestly, a good North Carolina high school team (or even a major college intramural champion) would have played as well. I realize it's early in the season, but a lot of sloppy turnovers, silly shot selection, bunch of out of control offensive fouls. Ended up 59-55, I think. And the local team does have a very good point guard who came close to a triple-double.

We may try to catch some games in Florida this winter if there are junior colleges near Bradenton.

I loved watching FGCU in the tourney.
Flying up and down the floor without a care in the world just throwing up lob after lob……
Really fun to watch.

 

To its eternal regret, Louisville scheduled Bellarmine and is down 11 at halftime in Division I’s newest crosstown rivalry. The Cardinals are going to be atrocious this year.
