When you need a solid dose of 4/4 rock 'n roll...

"Well I was burnin' like a blowtorch in my prime
and everybody here is a friend of mine..."

I bought a compilation CD "The Sound of the Suburbs" in Britain and this was on it along with a bunch of other similar songs of the time from other artists, like "Echo Beach," "2-4-6-8 Motorway" and "I Don't Like Mondays." It was on heavy rotation for a good while.

2-4-6-8 Motorway is one of the great lost UK classics of that era. Just a tremendous song.

Echo Beach was a great one from Toronto heroes Martha and the Muffins.

Leyla McCalla was one of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, but her specialty was Caribbean creole music rather than the the Carolina Piedmont. She is doing great work on her own.

No, the cover that hit big (and made the Zutons a *lot* of money) was by Amy Winehouse. I'll throw three of those up, because they're very different. If Amy didn't cut that song, the entire Glastonbury festival crowd isn't singing with them, trust me.

This is probably my favorite because of Mark Ronson's production here. The vocal is Amy, but she's played by revolving girls because she really didn't like the strings being added.

Then again, this might be my favorite, because you can really hear what she's doing with it.

The Back to Black studio version, also Ronson producing.
