Covered a state championship game today where the score got a little out of hand. Team A scored on the first possession of the second half to go up 38-0, which triggered the running clock the rest of the way. One of the assistant coaches on Team B's sideline started grumbling to a guy on the chain gang about how they shouldn't have the mercy rule in a championship game, which led to this exchange:

ASSISTANT: It's ridiculous that they do that in a championship game.
CHAIN GANG GUY: Well coach, that's been the rule all year. You've done it to a bunch of people.
ASSISTANT: Well, it's different when they're whippin' our ass.

14 at kickoff tonight. Thankfully, I was running the play clock upstairs.

About 30 on Saturday, but in the sunshine for a lower-end semifinal.

It's so fun when a team that pulls that crap all year long (or for several years) finally gets the cannons turned on them.

The running clock gets triggered when a team gets up by 35 at any point in the second half. In this particular league (a private school 8-man league) it's not hard for the better teams to do it often. This particular team wins a lot of blowouts that reach that point, but it's not because they're running up the score.

Well, they won of course. Cheerleader smack talk always works. ;)

That's true for any association that hews to NFHS rules.

In Texas you take your beatdown in regulation time unless your violator shows mercy, because a running clock has to be by mutual agreement.
