Don't take victory laps yet. If there's one thing Trump's good at, it's at playing the victim card.

 

Death counts from 7/1/2021-10/18/2022 per the fedruhl gubmint:
California: 32,581 (83.03 per 100K)
Gov. DeathSentence's state: 44,002 (202.02 per 100K)

That's a pretty big gap. Big enough that it probably can't be fully explained by the proportion of the total population over age 65.
Maybe there's a contributing factor. Maybe it includes the fact that DeathSentence's state surgeon general is a total nut case and quack who got the gig because he claims that no vaccines are safe and are therefore no better than a placebo.

 

He won't be the only SEC Senator who has no interest in the gig. Marco Rubio flat-out said as much during his aborted POTUS bid. Yet when he got trounced by Trump, he suddenly figured he might as well try to retain the piddly little job he had. Alabama's Tommy Tuberville doesn't know a thing and doesn't seem to like the job, either.
But remember, children: Trumpists are the only true patriots in Amurrrica.

18.4% of Californians are 55 or older

You're probably right that the difference in death rates can't be "fully explained" by the massive difference in age demographics between the two states.

But it would be nice if an acknowledgement can be made that it is a huge factor instead of just throwing out two numbers and going "neener, neener DeathSantis!"

And the bottom line, as has been stated before, is that each state is HAPPY with its choices. Throughout the pandemic Florida has boasted a lower unemployment rate than California --- and even today it's 2.5% (vs. 3.9% in Calif.). Each state last week gave its citizens a chance to state their satisfaction with their leaders. Each won in a landslide.

 

It would likewise be nice to acknowledge that your governor was more concerned about the optics of Covid and playing into myth than actually doing the things that could have saved lives. Or at the very least not tried to cover up the true number of those affected.

 

Approximately 320,000 Californians died in 2020.
Approximately 250,000 Floridians died in 2020.

The elderly share of California population is twice the elderly share of Florida population.
Florida's COVID death count per 100K is 2.5 times that of California.
That 2x to 2.5x is not a trivial gap. And it didn't have to be that way. DeathSentence didn't just rebel at the notion of mask mandates or other basic measures. He appointed a vitriolic, moronic opponent of vaccines as the state's chief public-health officer. He put a personal branding exercise and virtue-signaling operation over human decency.
