Well, he doesn't grant much media access, so he hasn't been under the gun for answers. I'd say the problems are deeper than he thought, and a complete rebuild was always a possibility.

Jaro Halak is turning into a major problem for the Rangers. He is 0-5-1 in his starts so far. Last night, two incredibly soft goals, and the third was a save most goalies make. Last 5 starts, Shesterkin has looked close to what he was last year. You can't have that much of a dropoff from your starter to you backup. The Rangers stashed Louis Domingue in the AHL, but Halak has a no-move, including the minors, in his contract. It's a problem.

Another problem was maybe giving a no-move to a 37-year-old goalie who hadn’t been a starter in five years.

I did not know that insofar as Halak. Kinda strange how he’s hung around so long.

Quite something that they managed to give him a special night in Toronto just recently. A real talent and a trailblazer.

First goal was after a bad rebound. Second was the softest goal I've ever seen. Third was a great shot by Troy Terry into the upper corner on the stick side. He used the d-man as a screen. That wasn't a stop most goalies make.
Gibson was incredible last night, but still gave up 2 goals and the Rangers hit 5 goal posts. Shots were 17-2 in the third period so the Ducks were fortunate to hang on.

Actually I just watched the first two goals. The McTavish goal wasn’t a rebound. The shot hit either hit Zibanejad or got knocked down by Jones or McTavish, then the puck went to McTavish at the back door and he had an easy tap-in. Not really on Halak.

    The Kulakov goal, yes. Terrible.

Totally agree, except the starter part. They didn’t get him as a starter. But there were a bunch of back-up goalies available, and they signed him on day 1, for more $$ than some other good options. So he was clearly who they had targeted. They got the benefit of the doubt from me, cause 1) Benoit Allaire, their goalie coach has been a miracle worker in the past. Every player he gets turns into a better goalie. They don’t make a goalie move without him involved, so I figured it must be ok. Plus, if you are a Rangers fan, you’d seen Halak kill your team over the years. He always turned into super goalie when he played against ny. But yeah, that no move is a killer right now. It’s the in the same pattern of Drury paying too much, or giving extra years to try to make sure he secures who they targeted. They extended Ryan Reaves for a year at $1.75 million right after they traded for him. He was already proving he was too slow last year, this year he was a healthy scratch a bunch of games in a row. They are up against the cap, though. If they waived him, and he cleared to the AHL, it would have cost them a few million of accumulated cap space at the trade deadline. Drury got lucky with Minnesota bailing him out and trading for Reaves.

Right. To clarify, I wasn’t implying they got him to start. I just pointed that out to highlight he probably didn’t have a ton of leverage, so I didn’t get why they’d give him a no move.
