After the first 20-25 minutes, this is a pretty good result. They went from being under siege to taking the game to England.

Now, it's a matter of beating Iran. So ... again ... "I Believe That We Will Win." None of this other scenario crap. Win and in.

Well, there really isn't any other scenario that doesn't include a win, right? :)

Looking at my social media feeds after the game and my crappy 2-9 college football team, playing another 2-9 team, and they are tied 0-0 after the first and a bunch of snarky comments, especially from media members about how it's a draw and that's good and crap like that. Like this garbage football game is better than the World Cup game that just happened.

I get that many still don't like soccer, and I get 0-0 isn't aesthetically pleasing, but that was an entertaining, tense game. I mostly ignore it, but it is still silly to me that people can bash a high-level contest that just happened, especially compared to an absolutely awful college football game that almost no one is watching unless they are paid to be there.

Could get in with a tie against Iran combined with England win or tie over Wales. That would leave the Americans with three points - and goal differential tiebreaker - over Iran's three points. Wales would have two points at most.

Hey, I don't want to wallow in the scenarios, but it doesn't mean we have no clue. In summary ... screw all this crap, beat Iran and get into the knockouts.

Fearing what they don't understand is one guess.

Hey, my hockey team blew a two-goal lead while the Americans and English fought to a scoreless tie. The alma mater's football team - which is 7-4 but starting its fourth different quarterback this season because injuries - are at a rival whose quarterback mouthed off a few weeks back and could use a takedown. Alma mater men's basketball plays late tonight. Alma mater women's basketball playing now.

    Not much going on.

Iran would have four points then.

I also hope everyone saw that there was one player on the pitch who improved his club's position with nearly every touch.

No. 10, over on the left wing. You love him or you hate him.

I'd put myself in the box for two minutes, but wrong sport. Won't be suspended because of yellow cards.

Anyhoo ... thanks for the correction. Win and in. That simple.

This is what I get for trying to post this while watching the football game on the big screen and stream the women's basketball game. Thank goodness I'm not on a desk misinforming readers.

We almost worded it exactly the same!

The same idiots decrying a 0-0 tie (which is pretty much a "win" for the US) are those who love no-hitters. Go figure.

Again, fear what they don't understand.

Flattened an SE once verbally with similar scenario. When I told him, "why is a 1-0 soccer match considered 'boring,' yet a 1-0 baseball game is the greatest thing ever?" No real answer to that one.
