Always figured he and David Shaw would get to choose when they left. The service academies are weird deals. Pretty sure Paul Johnson was the only one to win enough to get a better job - of either academy.

Though let the rumors start here, that Belichick is going to retire from the Pats and coach Navy.

Here's one: Steve Belichick to the Academy. Grandson of a Navy assistant coach who worked for George Welsh.

Ken N. passed up some better opportunities. I think he was up for BYU before Bronco Mendenhall was hired. I think the land wars ending played a small part. Kids going to West Point aren’t signing up for automatic trips to the sandbox, like they were 10 years ago. Any little recruiting edge at the academies, you take it. Also perhaps being in the AAC sink them a bit.

Do they, uh, administer drug tests to prospective football coaches at Navy?

Patriots fans are praying to whoever their favorite deity is, hoping this happens tomorrow. The consensus among some fans is that he’s Jay Paterno but on the defensive side of the ball.

Should have taken the BYU job when he had a chance 3-4 years ago, when he was hot after Keenan Reynolds as his QB. They hired Sitake instead and he's done OK.

He's like Bob Sutton at Army. You can do well for only so long before the realities of how hard it is to recruit to a service academy catches up with you. Plus, they haven't dumbed down their schedule like Army has.

Meanwhile, Oregon State extends Jonathan Smith through 2029. Smart move, he's done a great job.

With Niumatalolo and David Shaw out, we're down to eight FBS coaches who were hired at their current school before 2013. Kirk Ferentz (1999) is the only one hired before 2005.
Out of 131 FBS schools, 84 have changed head coaches since 2020.

I'm going to take a shot at this without looking and see how far I can get:
    Nick Saban
    Mike Gundy
    Mack Brown *
    Greg Schiano *
    Dabo Swinney
    Mike Stoops
    Kyle Whittingham
    * Hired both before and after 2013

Yes. Troy Calhoun's first year was 2007. Good dude.

You got Saban (2007), Gundy (2005), Troy Calhoun (2007), Dabo (2009) and Whittingham (2008), and I already gave you Ferentz at Iowa (1999).

Mike Stoops was hired in 2013.
Schiano and Brown don't count. These are guys in their current tenures hired pre-2013.
    There are two others.

Calhoun has been mentioned for just about every job west of St Louis in the last 5 years but I think he’s generally happy and content in the Springs.
