The part where the 100-megaton nuke sets off a mega-tsunami off New York City scared me.

This is how I doubt the existence of a benevolent god. Henry Kissinger is a Jimmy Carter away from outlasting every last major figure he lied to, swindled, cheated and bamboozled.

Crimea was part of Russia until the 1950's. It is populated by ethnic Russians.

Since the 2014 invasion I believe there has been substantial internal migration. The people who did not like the Russian takeover of Crimea left. I think the same is true of the Donbas.

The history of Europe has been wars over borders. There will never be a perfect solution. Are Crimea and the Donbas worth the destruction of the rest of the Ukraine? Are they worth a possible WWIII?

Interesting analysis of the tactics of the Russian Wagner Group mercenaries in the ongoing Battle of Bakhmut, which has devolved into trench warfare. The Wagners are using a modern spin on WWI style human wave tactics, owing to their poor training and organization. They're mostly getting their asses kicked, but are a real pain in the ass for the Ukrainians because they keep throwing bodies at the problem.
The bigger fear is also that the Wagners are basically fighting a holding action — i.e., they're making the Ukrainians expend blood and ammo over a nuisance, while the rest of the Russian army gets its act together for a major offensive in January or February.

I don't know if the Russians have enough beans, bullets or bodies for any type of counteroffensive. If the Ukrainians had airborne troops, trench warfare would be obsolete. Geez, where did I hear that before.
