This was just about the only rational choice available. Still I’d put the over/under on him staying at three years, and the third mostly out of sympathy for the difficult circumstances.

Mahomes wasn’t quite Goddamn Mahomes! yet.

Yeah, but he wasn't facing NFL defenses, either. He was losing to ASU.

It's easy to forget now, but the Cardinals didn't hire Kingsbury away from Texas Tech. He got fired there.

Because he couldn't recruit defense. Texas Tech lost and won a lot of 42-39 games. But his teams put up points.

Turns out you need one of those in the pros as well. But who am I to question the institutional genius of (checks notes) the Arizona Cardinals.

Oh, I'm no Kingsbury backer. Just saying the guy's offenses put up points in college.

True. John Elway was 15-18 as a starter his last three seasons at Stanford. It's a team game.

Right, but Kingsbury was coaching the whole team, and poorly. I suspect Stanford wouldn't have had 15 wins without Elway.

He was the golden child alum coach WITH those fancy offenses and Tech still fired him. I've never understood why he'd be a good candidate for anything above OC. I could squint and see maybe how an NFL team talked themselves into hiring him (kind of forget the circumstances there) but jesus, he was not a good CFB head coach. Doesn't mean he can't be, or won't be in the future, but he was so bad his alma mater canned him.

Is it just because he's good looking? Is that the reason he keeps failing upward? I need to workout more.

At the time the chief reasons seemed to be (a) he's young and (b) he's met Sean McVay.

Reminder: Cardinals fired Steve Wilks (4-4 in Carolina, btw) after a year, where he had Josh Rosen foisted on him, all for Kingsbury.

The Dino Gaudio clause. Skip Prosser died in the summer of 2007 and they just couldn't purge everybody. Promoted Dino, who had been head coach at Army and Loyola of Baltimore. I figured he'd go 40-50 and get whacked in three years. He went 60-30 with two NCAA bids in three years and got whacked anyway.
