Rocky Long leaving the flailing Lobos to move to 'Cuse as DC and double his salary at age 72 is...interesting.

First coaching stop east of the Mississippi for Long. One of the great coaches of the game. Glad he's getting paid.

How much is the DC at your run-of-the-mill ACC school getting now? High six-figures?

And a great guy. Our families were friends, we played softball together (Brady Hoke was on the team too) and I watched NYD bowls at his house several times. Both of his daughters were standout athletes in Microville when he was DC for the Beavers.

Kind of a surprising move but maybe he needed a change of scenery. My guess is, he doesn't sell his house in Albuquerque and he'll be back when he finally retires.

My uncle played with him in high school, Alta Loma High in Rancho Cucamonga.

Looks like Ed Reed is following Deion's path.

Translation: Nobody wanted the job after the whacked coach spoke the truth about the competitive imbalances between the service academies.

Or, to put it another way, Bethune-Cookman is following Jackson State's path.

You could say JSU followed Grambling’s path with Doug Williams, but the media hype wasn’t there for that one, nor for Eddie George who is at Tennessee State.

Doug Williams was different in that he was an alum. The SWAC is famous for getting former players to "come home" and lead the program. It helps that they can usually get them to do it on the cheap as well. It's a very insular league. Most of its head coaches have some sort of preexisting tie to it, either as a player or a former coach, or both, and they rarely look far outside the family.
That's what made Deion Sanders, Eddie George and now Ed Reed — and even Jay Hopson way before them — so unique, was that those were rare moments of a SWAC/HBCU school going way outside the box to make a hire.
