There was speculation that round 1 would be performance art. The extremists would make a statement for one round and then fall into line.
Looks like they’re going to do so in round 2. How long will it last?

The strange thing is that nobody can be sworn in to a new term until the Speaker is chosen, but every member-elect — even the rookies — can vote for Speaker. So they’re voting before they’re officially in the new Congress.

We’ve already had Round 2. McCarthy didn’t win.

This really is a great preview of the next two years of GOP "leadership" in the House. Absolutely nothing will get done other than performance art. It really is all they have.

If this could go on for 2 years, it would be glorious. Without a speaker, as a body they can't do anything more to screw up the country.

Which is the best-case scenario, frankly.

In the very unlikely event there were to be, for lack of better terms, a minority government, how would that work in this system?

Does the speaker solely set committee seats for the majority?

Jeffries would have to get assurances from the handful of Republicans that they’d vote with Democrats — which will be tough, because Democrats don’t vote with Democrats. This isn’t Westminster.

Said Republicans could also bring the whole thing down with five members calling for a vote of no confidence, depending on how Dems set up rules for this Congress.

I know the odds of this happening are pretty much non-existent and this is a lot of mental masturbation, but it’s fascinating to think about.

I know it’s too much to ask, but I sure hope a Republican says “we can’t have a guy who looked the other way as his players were being molested” as Speaker of Jordan starts getting traction.
