Mike Reed Sets Goals for New Gannett

I said it was a goal. Goals are frequently unrealistic. I have previously posted that if you work at Gannett start looking for a another job NOW! Especially at a smaller paper. I think a large metro paper like Phoenix will stay open (though I think one Detroit paper will fold.). But I think smaller markets will be closed or rolled into a larger paper.

Nor should it ... except for the loyal, older subscribers who don't/won't get their news anywhere else.

Time to boot up that "new" technology, folks. You've had fair warning for years. (Pro tip: Your grandkid is all you need.)

Quite right. Is it still news if a subscriber gets Monday's paper on Tuesday? Maybe a "day delay by mail" is Reed's new business plan and his push to go all digital?

Usually if you get the papers to the post office by 5 a.m. or so, they'll go out in that day's mail.

Former colleague of mine said that the new head of the Gannett news division did a site visit to Nashville a couple weeks ago and warned editors that 2023 outlook is bleak.

Do these papers still offer home delivery or have they gone entirely to U.S.P.S.? I fully expect the smaller Gannett properties to be U.S.P.S. soon.

I think Gannett will make this change because U.S.P.S. delivers on a daily basis. I think many Gannett subscribers don't receive their paper on a daily basis due to carrier shortages.

At this point mail delivery is probably the best option for most papers outside big metros. Those who are on the end of the mail routes will wait all day. That beats not getting a paper at all.
