    This isn't a comment about Richard Rubin. ... he's just reporting something factual.

    But there are a lot of ways for the government to increase revenues, and even increase our spending, and do it in a deficit negative way (which is still adding to the debt, FWIW, which should be the first clue that maybe spending matters, too).

    It doesn't mean those things would necessarily be moral or just or consistent with the values that America was predicated on.

    For example, let's say they expanded the size and powers of the IRS beyond what it even is today (at a cost of $X), and gave it even more policing powers, and empowered it to terrorize people into handing over way more than $X at gunpoint (or threat of prison).

    The fact that it is deficit negative wouldn't make it right. Should we also invade Canada at a military cost of $Y to steal its natural resources, because those resources are worth way more than $Y?
