Brave New World is a terrible book. It's a dumb mess.

You need to click through to get the full effect. In the clipped off part of the bottom tweet, the OP is asked if "when you went to the optometrist, did you ask for "extra-Jewy" frames?"

    I love Singapore.

In the U.S., if someone is camped out in your property and has breached their rent agreement, getting them out can take years and cost you considerable income. Our laws are designed to protect someone stealing from you. It's unjust.

In Singapore, if you don't pay your rent, the landlord can send you a termination of tenancy letter, take it to court (where the tenant can dispute the allegation of breach), and get a court order to enforce an eviction if the tenant hasn't paid what they agreed to. It's a place where property rights are taken seriously. They move the process along to protect the property owner.

FWIW, the deadbeat act is Elon Musk 101. He has run Tesla that way, too, pausing payments to contactors and vendors, and sometimes trying to renegotiate what he owes down with the threat that he'll withhold payment.

I love that he learned that the Singaporeans don't suffer assholes lightly. My understanding is that he paid the overdue rent by the end of the day so they could get back in the offices. So it not only didn't work as a sleazeball tactic, yet again, he brought bad PR to Twitter (which is doubly great, because the company has no communications department anymore for all the news outlets feasting on the story to contact for comment).
