High school volleyball photo galleries were the most clicked on thing on our website when I was at the paper and it was not even close.

Compared to men’s beach volleyball. Thought I heard the women were pushing to change the outfits.

As I’ve aged, I haven’t understood the need to make women’s sports unis more for the male gaze than for practical use. Out of the sports where men and women both play, basketball soccer and baseball/softball are the ones that don’t do this. There’s no reason to force women into short skirts to play tennis. If guys can wear loose shorts for volleyball, why can’t women? Gymnastics, why can’t it be practical for the movement, but not basically bathing suits?

But that said, men are jerks. It wouldn’t matter if a gymnast was wearing practical shorts or leggings or whatever, they’re going to be jerks to attractive, athletic women. And it sucks women have to put up with it. We do a terrible job educating boys to actually respect women and how to recognize and appreciate an attractive person without the need to turn into cavemen about it.

Yeah. Personally, I want as much fabric area between sand and my groin/butt crack as is possible. Sand gets in everything.

I don't know how the woman beach volleyball players put up with it.

Every year there is a big youth gymnastics competition in town. If there is one event where I make a point to keep my work-issued ID — the one with "PRESS" and the paper's logo clearly visible — on a lanyard around my neck, it's that one.
And if there's another assignment where I hit the "delete" button on the camera faster for any photo taken from a bad angle, I don't know what it is.

My high school buddies and I wore out my VHS copy of it circa 1994-96 and still routinely quote it to each other.

    Those aren't talls, man.

My oldest son is in youth wrestling for the first time this season and it's been interesting to see how the sport has changed in the 20+ years since I was last involved. One of those changes is the tremendous growth of girls participation.

When I was a wrestler, females had to wear a regular singlet, which were all cut for male bodies, and a sports bra, and have their hair under a swim cap if it was any length at all. There wasn't much room for modesty. At some events they could get away with a t-shirt underneath, but it was technically against the rules and all it took was one asshole who thought they didn't belong in the sport to raise a stink.

The rules on dress for everyone have changed - compression shirts are allowed; combat shorts can be a substitute for a singlet; hair can be long and tied up without a swim cap - but more importantly, the growth of participation has led to easily available singlets actually cut for female bodies.

I was thinking about all that yesterday as we were at a big tournament, there were a lot of female wrestlers and it was awesome to see both that participation and that the rules allow all the kids to find uniforms in which they feel comfortable.

More than 1,000 girls wrestling in Pennsylvania, and the number of sanctioned high school programs has grown to around 100.

They are still having issues with the Harrisburg Diocese, which won't allow male wrestlers in their parochial schools to wrestle females. On several occasions, this has led to accusations of some schools packing females into their lineup against the Catholics, knowing they'll get forfeits at those weights.

When I wrestled in high school, there was usually a gaggle of girls at each meet waiting to check out our junk when we took our warmups off.
