This obviously gives little guidance on the right thing for the U.S. and others to do. ... but it is worth asking if Eliot A Cohen has ever seen a war or a fight that he isn't all in on.

Like a lot of American guys his age (my age) his war philosophy was likely founded on or at least influenced by Vietnam.

'Go to war to win' is pretty standard thinking from policy guys of that vintage.

He's right about sending more - and more advanced - weapons.

There is no better way to make it clear to Putin that we're not going to stand and watch as he uses his standard game plan of bombing to opposition flat. We're already in conflict. Keep NATO boots off the ground as long as it remains possible, but otherwise back Ukraine. Allowing Russia to expand it's borders by force of arms is simply not acceptable.

Party like it's 1915, you crazy Russkies.
The Russians are basically using World War I infantry tactics and human wave attacks — apparently led by Zapp Branigan — in their fight for Bakhmut. Sadly, it's working. They're throwing more bodies at the problem than the Ukrainians have bullets in some cases.
