That is Russian roulette on the apps. Did it once, early in my gambling career, emptying my meager offshore account for a meager payout on USC with six minutes to go in the 2006 Rose Bowl. It's a lesson best learned when you're young and with a small bankroll.

Three years ago, when I had a bankroll of about $300 (this was long before I mastered sign-up bonuses and Doosan Bears overs), I put $44 on the Patriots to win $10 (-440) over the Titans in the playoffs. More of an emotional hedge as a Chiefs fan.

That $-44 stung. Lesson learned for the most part.

In 2020, there was that Chiefs/Bucs game at Tampa before the Super Bowl. By this point, my bankroll was up to about $8000, I think. Chiefs up 27-24 late and only needing a first down to clinch it. 4th and 2 I think and they went for it. I remember plunking down $275 to win $25. Stupid. It paid off but stupid.

There are times when it’s okay to bet a heavy favorite. I’ll do it as a leg in arbitrage betting to cancel out the juice. (Example: In 2021, I think I had 8 different two-leg parlays where one leg was Rams -260 to ML the Bears in the opener. I had Rams -260 at FD and it was +320 everywhere else. So I would carve out middles all over the place on the other side using boosts for one-run middles on first 5 MLB totals, Euro Cup soccer first half totals, WC ML qualifying, anything.).

Rams won easily so I made a few hundred off those bets and some of the middles also hit.

Damn, I miss it. Arb betting and playing the numbers may have been the one practical skill I coulda been a contenduh at.

In sports betting, it’s perfectly okay to lose early at low levels as long as you learn what not to do later.

Rank amateurs. Make your bet, and then it's out of your hands. That's worse than bitching about fantasy to players.

Good. You know who else doesn't want to hear about your bad luck? Your blackjack dealer at the casino. You gamble, it's a risk. That's the damn game.

The only time I bitched at a blackjack dealer was when he hit to 21 six times in a row.

I play a lot of blackjack. Yeah, shit happens. Seen a dealer hit to 21 five times in a row. I've also gotten blackjack five times in a row. It's the cards, not the dealer. They don't care. It's not their money.

As I've said when playing, some days you're the dog and some days you're the fire hydrant.

Anyone know what's the deal in Ohio? Do you have to do sports betting in person or is it like Colorado where, it's geo-fenced and 99 percent of it is done on phones, as long as you're in the state? Not that it matters, but could be hard to block people from betting if they can do it on their phone.

All those online sports books like FanDuel, DraftKings, Barstool, you name it, are now legal in Ohio.

In person, you can go to the casino in downtown Cleveland and place a bet either with a person or through a kiosk. I imagine that’s the same with all in-person locations.

    Probably the same as Colorado.

I think that's bigger talk than action about banning players, and unless you can get some kind of multi-state ban (good luck), all those lowlifes can also just drive to Indiana or Michigan.

Yeah, Virginia, the only place you can actually bet on sports is on the online books. Hey, I bet on Knicks ML at halftime tonight thinking the Wizards couldn't win at MSG. I lost. Oh well. It happens. I'm not going to @ Quickley about it.

Colorado has only three town where you can bet in-person: About 30 casinos in-state total. Two about 45 miles west of Denver and the other in the hinterlands west of Colorado Springs. But you can place bets on your phone anywhere within the state, thus 99 percent of sports bets are placed on phones/apps. And they have raked in more money than the state anticipated.
