Just remembered when I posted this.

Since then, Halak is 6-1. He's 5-0 in his last five starts with a .937 save percentage and a 1.81 GAA. It's quite a turnaround.

I can’t see how the Ilses make this deal without assurances that Horvat signs.

Why would Horvat give away his free agency leverage at this point? He's better off with multiple teams potentially out there who might be interested when he is negotiating his next contract.

And LeBrun has both Horvat and Lamoriello saying there have been no talks in his story.

LeBrun: Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello bets big on Bo Horvat — will it pay off?

On a call with the media Monday evening, Lamoriello said the Islanders “really haven’t had any discussions yet” with Horvat’s camp, led by veteran agent Pat Morris. I later asked him how much urgency there was, given the gamble that he’s an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

“I think it’s important to (start negotiations) as soon as possible,” Lamoriello responded. “We’ll work at it and do the best we can. But it’s a great point. We’ll do everything we can to get it done.”

Horvat, on an earlier media call, said “nothing has been discussed as of yet” when asked about potential extension talks.

“This all happened so fast. No talks on that yet,” Horvat said. “Obviously, we’ll see if we can get something done, but we’ll leave it to Pat to handle that.”

You think they are going to admit to discussions? Horvats agent has 5 other clients on the Islanders. We’ll see.

The Islanders have been unwatchable for the last month. I don't think there's much there there, but with that old core and Lamoriello in the last known year of his contract, they've got little choice but to go for it. We all know his/their style works in the playoffs and they have a goalie who can carry them.

Also, another part of my working theory about what is going on. ... is that they built that new arena (right into Covid, which put a damper on it), thought they were going to have a really good team playing in it. ... and it's been a dud.

They probably feel like they squandered the excitement that comes with a new arena boost if their team is boring and they aren't making the playoffs. Which is why they might be feeling even more pressure to try to make a playoff push.

This whole era might be a bit of a fluke. They were going to miss the playoffs before the pandemic ended the '19-20 season. Got hot in the bubble and were solid but not great in the shortened '21 season--good enough to easily get into the playoffs, but nobody saw them coming this close to dethroning the Lightning. Easy enough to blame last season on the crazy travel and multiple COVID stoppages, but it's been more of the same this year. Barring a dramatic turnaround, it'll be three straight full-ish seasons where they were meh. It's very cool they got the dramatic playoff runs, but this is probably closer to who they are and were the whole time.

Leave it to the NHL and ESPN to make the skills competition boring. They stretched out the contests so there was no flow. Instead of doing one contest at a time, they did preliminary rounds and finished them later in the night.

There was a confusing goalie/shooter thing and instead of running the breakaway challenge all at once, they mixed the competitors in one at a time. It’s usually silly fun, but this one was over produced.

I haven’t watched in years, but isn’t it always boring?

I am glad I didn't watch the skills competition. I am sure it would have had me pulling out the hair I have left.

Not this boring. No one looked like they wanted to be there.

Gotcha. And yeah, they haven’t wanted to be there for years, which is why the league started suspending guys a game if they didn’t go.
