2023 Rock & Roll HOF screechfest

You can put me among the crusty old bastards who think that the RRHOF should be full of actual rockers and songwriters and the various blues/country/bluegrass/R&B/Soul artists who provided the source material it was built on. The biggest problem with that is that they've put so many people in now that they'd be scraping the slime of the bottom of the barrel for new noms. That said, there are a number of screamingly deserving bands who have not gotten a sniff. King Crimson. The Replacements. The Guess Who. The Meters. Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Jethro Tull. The Pixies. Soundgarden. Big Star. Motorhead.

My personal axe to grind is one of the best American live bands of the 1970's, Little Feat. Nut kicks to the the Hall voters all around, because it's a screaming shame that they aren't in the hall.

Spot on on Little Feat. They were huge critical faves too in addition to their popularity as a live band who also made some damn good studio albums. (Like Laura Nyro and Carly Simon - to name just two - have better credentials?) Their omission is a puzzler

 

Agreed, Dolly lacks standing to be in the RRHOF. Trouble is, the Jaycees are making the picks in Cleveland.

 

Well, give Dolly credit - at first she declined the nom, and then when it became obvious they were voting her in anyhow, she took it gracefully and then started sessions to cut a rock record. Bless her, there's a reason she's a beloved icon, even if she really shouldn't be in the rock hall.

 

So rename it the “Popular Music Hall of Fame” and Willie and the other named acts make wonderful sense.

If we want to stretch back the definition, rock and roll has been around 75 years. Professional baseball has existed twice as long, yet the RRHOF has slightly more members.

 

Since there doesn't seem to be a running Grammys thread:

Most anachronistic Grammy winner: Jethro Tull in 1989 or Bonnie Raitt in 2023?

 

Good to see the Grammys has a sense of boundaries -- was just about to push being a half-hour over

 

Maybe because Rock’s drug abusers get in?

 

Name a non-drug* abuser who isn't in. * includes alcohol.

Billie Eilish is straight in at No. 1, baby.

 

Name a musical genre that hasn't touched rock 'n' roll tangentially.

Classical music, maybe OK. But I won't stand in the way of John Williams. And if he's admitted, that won't automatically mean I'll stand in the way of Aaron "Bad News Bears" Copland and the best classical composer ever, George Santos.
