With Horvat, guys rarely pass on the 8th year that the current team can offer.

I thought guys like Brady Tkachuk and Thomas Chabot might take bridges to test the market and get out of Ottawa. But when something like 8 X 8 is on the table they almost always sign. Tavares was obviously an exception.

I don’t like 8 (or 7) year contracts, and I don’t like how late in their careers they come to most players. The NHL system really saddles teams with bad contracts.

With the market being set by the Horvat trade and signing you have to wonder if Yzerman is finding out what he can get for Larkin
Boston is reportedly interested but Brandon Carlo would have to be in the deal and I can’t see Boston doing that
I could see Carolina or the Rangers doing it
Both have No 1 picks, prospects and a young player in return
Necas for Carolina, Kakko for the Rangers
Kings have the ammo but I don’t know if they need a center

Necas isn’t going anywhere and Carlo has had 4 or 5 concussions. I’d be scared of that

Bruins also have to sign Pastrnak
Don’t think they can sign him and get Larkin too

Larkin is not what the Rangers need. And even if he were, I would bet that Kakko isn't available. Not even close to being available for that kind of deal.

Either way, the Rangers have Mika, Trocheck and Chytil at center. Chytil has been playing really well. The Rangers need a right winger, and not just a right winger, but one who can play with Panarin. Trocheck has not been a good fit with him at center, and it's worse when they don't have the right kind of opposite winger. Right wing is a weakness for the Rangers. Which is why Kakko isn't going anywhere. I can't see them trading their most promising right winger for another center. ... that doesn't really address a need.

The last few games before the break, Gallant put Panarin with Mika, put the kid line back together (Chytil centering Lafreniere and Kakko), and had Trocheck centering Kreider and Goodrow. It was working really well. I can't see them giving up Kakko as part of a Larkin deal. Kakko is progressing. They don't have the cap space to sign Larkin. And they don't need anther center.

My sense is that despite all the big talk of Patrick Kane or them making a splashy move, Drury will do role players around the edges for his trades -- like he did with Tyler Motte, Frank Vatrano, Justin Braun last year. He'd trade Kravtsov if there is a team that sees the potential (and it has been apparent). Some of their excess defensive prospects who have value could go in a deal. Like Zac Jones or Matthew Robertson. I am certain there are teams who will value Zac Jones. And they have two first round picks next year, although they won't trade those picks for the kinds of players I think they are going to focus on. But one of their first rounders could be in a play if he does go for a better player than I am talking about.

The Athletic began its "NHL 99" series with the premise that Wayne Gretzky is the greatest player of the modern era, but who are the next 99? They posted No. 2, which I don't think was ever in doubt. I'm sure some people will argue for Bobby Orr, but it had to be Mario Lemieux. They even quoted Scotty Bowman arguing about No. 1.

“You might have him too low. Mario’s the best player that ever lived.”

The least controversial thing about that series has to be Gretzky 1, Lemiuex 2, Orr 3.

When you get down into a list like that, obviously it is subjective, and part of what you go for with it is to get people to argue with your choices.

If I was going to quibble with anything about what they did it would be small things, though. Like Joe Sakic being several spots ahead of Mark Messier stuck out to me. But even there, if someone wants to argue with that ordering, you are still talking about Joe Sakic and Mark Messier, and how can you argue too hard about it?

When you say “it had to be Mario,” do you say that because you believe he’s absolutely #2, or because you think The Athletic wouldn’t dream of putting anybody else there?

Last offseason, Necas could have been had for a used puck bag.

Not now. While Svechnikov might have been the team's All-Star rep, Sebastian Aho, Martin Necas and Jaccob Slavin have been better.

Both, but there is no doubt in my mind that he belongs that high. As I mentioned, I've heard the arguments for Orr, but I don't buy them.

I've enjoyed the series and a lot of the articles, and the Sakic ranking is the only one that really stuck out to me. I would have Yzerman and quite possibly Messier ahead of him (and in two years McDavid, of course).

Only other thought I had is that Modano might be too high at 51. I know it was the Dead Puck Era and that the Stars convinced him to focus more on defense but apart from his single 50-goal season he never topped 38.

What don’t you buy about them?
