We’ll see if the majority of the media blows it off.

It’s a blockbuster that the administration calls “complete fiction.” As in, Hersh’s source made it all up. The sonar buoy, the timing, the bombs, Biden’s late-in-the-game audible. They just made it all up?

Mr. Hersh was persona non grata in most of the mainstream press even before the New Yorker stopped publishing him.

Legacy media will have no problem ignoring him.

That said, this story is out there and someone somewhere will follow up on it. And everyone in government associated with it will deny it.

Sy Hersh is our Cassandra. Doomed to tell a truth no one listens to.

The level of detail in that story is astonishing, even for someone with Hersh's sources. I'm sure Germany is pissed off, but tactically it was a very effective move, both to get the Germans out of Putin's pocket and to deprive him of income and leverage.

I mean, it could start a hot war, too.

It's already pretty hot for the people dying in it.

And presumably the Russians have known with 95% certainty who blew it up from the moment it happened.

The Russians did not share that info with the American media.

Nothingburger, then. (Which is entirely possible in this media landscape. It may very well be utterly ignored because it complicates the narrative.)

Not a nothingburger. But impossible to prove.

I'm not sure what Putin can do going forward.

    Nor is Hersh's source:

The source had a much more streetwise view of Biden’s decision to sabotage more than 1500 miles of Gazprom pipeline as winter approached. “Well,” he said, speaking of the President, “I gotta admit the guy has a pair of balls. He said he was going to do it, and he did.”

Asked why he thought the Russians failed to respond, he said cynically, “Maybe they want the capability to do the same things the U.S. did.

“It was a beautiful cover story,” he went on. “Behind it was a covert operation that placed experts in the field and equipment that operated on a covert signal.

“The only flaw was the decision to do it.”

I think that Putin found out early on that he wasn't dealing with a pushover President any longer. That's worth a great deal when they're at that poker table.

By early on you mean...early in Putin's invasion of Ukraine? Because, of course, he invaded Ukraine, and did so one year after Biden had become president.

I'm not sure we can 100% attribute the invasion to some perceived weakness on Biden's part.

Just as likely that when Trump lost his second term, Putin lost his useful idiot.

A lot of what Putin set out to do - consolidate his territory in Eastern Ukraine and Crimea - could have been accomplished with Trump running a complicit White House under cover of negotiating "peace."
