I'd never heard of it before today - you know, it would have actually been a pretty good opportunity for Fox to promote the streaming service, Fox Soul doesn't have a news show though.

I’m not initially as troubled by this as I thought I’d be. The legislation would permit Bible classes as electives. Does this mean such classes are currently forbidden by statute?
The author’s invocation of the Clauson case is not on point, however.

I don't see something like that passing in Montana - more libertarian than Conservative. Also - there are a lot of news reports that get lathered up about ridiculous bills being proposed in state houses across the country, when in fact, if you asked a couple of people in those legislatures, have no chance in seeing the light of day out of committee. But someone on the fringes gets the opportunity to submit a bill or two and people act like it's on the governor's desk.

State by state, district by district we're likely to see more of these proposals rather than fewer.*

Historically there's been a lot of tension trying to establish an evangelical beachhead in public schools.

Obviously these classes can't be devotional. At least not yet. Here's the old ACLU guide:

    https://www.aclu.org/other/statement-bible-public-schools-first-amendment-guide

First, while it is constitutional for public schools to teach children about religion, it is unconstitutional to use public schools to advance particular religious beliefs.

Second, the structure of the specific course curriculum, including the choice of textbooks, supporting materials, and teacher outlines, should be developed with a conscientious effort to avoid advancing particular religious beliefs.

Third, if public schools decide to offer religion or Bible courses, teachers should possess the relevant academic training and should teach the course as a proper academic subject. The teacher's educational background should not be limited to that of a particular religious tradition, but should include serious academic study of the Bible.

Opinion: Freedom of or from religion?

Idaho Attorney General Raul Labrador has long championed public policy for more religious freedom. In 2023, Idaho legislation was proposed to create so-called Education Savings Accounts that could give Idaho tax dollars to families to spend on religious schooling. Legislation is proposed to remove the Idaho constitutional prohibition of using tax dollars for religious education (Article IX Sections 5 & 6). New and proposed laws and regulations in Idaho claim to be exercising religion-influenced practices such as prohibitions on history curriculum, secular library books, abortion and non-heterosexuality, along with promoting “traditional” roles of women and punishment of wrongdoing.

Took a Bible as Lit class at Berkeley one term - teacher spent 10 min. painstakingly explaining that this class wasn't theology or philosophy etc. Didn't matter - 10 minutes later two dudes were yelling at each other about how messed up the King James version is.

Top two denominations in Montana are the Roman Catholic Church and Latter Day Saints. Are the evangelicals whose fingerprints are all over this bill gonna be cool with their kids studying the Apocrypha or the Book of Mormon on the taxpayer dime?
