The first US Senator to endorse Carter and campaign for him in the 1976 primaries? Joe Biden.

In Carter's published White House diary, Biden gets a photo....of just himself.

I think we have forgotten that Carter was arguably the only the second Southerner to win the Presidency since the Civil War. Wilson was from the South but had been President of Princeton and the Governor of New Jersey so I don't think he was considered a Southerner. LBJ only won after assuming the office on death of Kennedy. I think that helped him carry the South.

Carter was also a pious, small-town farmer who a lot of rural America could relate to. Carter did not carry Colorado but he carried counties on the eastern plains that Democrats would not win 30% of the votes in today.

I also find the fact that in 1976 the country half the country was captivated by a pious, small town farmer and in 2016 half the country was captivated by a Trump very. very sad.

Yeah, the Left Coast voting Republican and the South (and Texas!) solidly for Carter.

Without looking it up, I think there’s a circled “1” from Washington state because one elector switched their vote to Carter.

EDIT: Elector switched vote to Reagan — thanks, Micro!

Switched to Reagan, making him a rare president who got electoral votes in three presidential elections.

That was also a time when conservative Democrats and liberal Republicans were not anomalies in their party leadership.

Ohio almost having as many electoral votes as Texas…

Like a color-coded map of a brain drain.

1956 and 1964 maps almost completely inverted. In just eight years.
