At this stage of their development either the Wings or Sabres would be thrilled with a first round playoff loss

Very true. But when you're a former Cup winner loaded w/vets like the Penguins & Caps, or an ancient team without a Cup like the Isles, you've probably got to chase the berth and hope you mount a run in April, May & June.

Sabres have at least four games in hand and Wings three in hand on everyone except Pittsburgh
Wings have Rangers and Lightning at home, two at Ottawa and Seattle at home before the trade deadline
Right now Yzerman reportedly isn’t trading anyone as long as they’re in the race

The Islanders seemed to have the Bruins' number for a while...Trotz completely owned Cassidy in the 2021 playoffs and the bedraggled Isles were 2-1 against the Bruins last year. But the Bruins swept the season series this year and obliterated the Islanders w/o Barzal on Saturday. I don't see much of a path for them in a 1 vs. 8 matchup.

That contract has just killed Ottawa, a budget team.

As they said on the radio this morning, Weber and Price are very close so sentimentalists would like to see them reunite in Tempe.

I was out playing golf and missed this today. I actually dig this move. Will miss Hathaway’s grit though. Caps are 13 points out of third in the Metro and will get smoked in the first round regardless. Get some assets, build for next year and beyond.

The Rangers played with only 11 forwards last night against Detroit (for "roster management" reasons). They proceeded to lose 4-1, they played sloppy and Detroit is playing tough right now. But the rumors are that they are setting the stages for a Patrick Kane trade. I am not sure how they make this work. They will need to clear some cap space, get a third party involved to retain salary and have some assets to trade. They have leverage, because Kane has a no trade, and supposedly they don't want to give up their remaining first rounder next year or their two top prospects (Will Cuyle and Brennan Othmann). The guys at PuckPedia did a video showing how it could be possible, and I find it wild because of how tight it will be in terms of waiving players (and when), just how much would have to go right. ... and if it gets done, they will need to wait right until the deadline to accrue the cap space. Here is the video:

As an aside, I really don't want him. He has been a great player, but I can't stand the guy personally, and with where he is in his career, I really don't want them to give up anything of significance for him. If they get him, they line up like this at forward

    Kreider Zibanejad Kane
    Panarin Trocheck Tarasenko
    Lafreniere Chytil Kaako
    Vesey Motte Goodrow
