1) Sadly, we've reached a point where we don't know what to believe and dismiss anymore. We're having the Pentagon come out and tell us, in a serious press conference, that we are not at war with aliens. Does a black ops operation that does an end run around Congress with plausible deniability for the president really seem that far-fetched right now?

2) If you believe that it's sabotage, who else has the capability to pull off a deep ocean demolition job like that? It's not exactly ragtag partisans with a satchel of C4 blowing up a soft target. It would've taken technical capabilities only a few countries in the world — maybe only one or two — possess.

As I posted upthread, even if Hersh has the broad contours of this event correct, his substack story is unverifiable.

No one in the chain of command will ever confirm it.

That being the case - and the US blowing up a pipeline being an act of war - who benefits by leaking an uncheckable version of the story to unfactchecked Sy Hersh?

Maybe we can get Weiss/Taibbi to report it out.
