Villains can have a point. It may not even be a good point. But it's a point.

I wouldn't expect those citizens to respond with grand equanimity and poise in this moment.

"Fox News hates Biden, ok? But they think they can just demand he appear wherever they want like a pawn on a chess board? It's f*cked up!"

I don't think they are mutually exclusive. And NS certainly looks worse here.

Optics aside, Norfolk- Southern is the villain here.

Norfolk Southern should be liquidated and its assets distributed to the town for cleanup/medical/pain and suffering.

Instead they'll pay a few million dollars in fines. Because they have the money and connections to make this mostly go away once the furor dies down. Capitalism!

I believe railroads pay property taxes on their rights of way. If that's true, there will not be a nationalization of our rail system, ever.

lol. Multiply that times infinity and you get DuPont, which has made avoiding cleanup on dozens if not hundreds of sites a cottage industry stretching over decades.

You'd be amazed at what eminent domain has tried to pull off.

So much of the predecessor railroads rights-of-way were gifted free land by government through condemnation/seizure/etc. Much later the RRs further monetized that real estate via leases for telecom runs. (SPRINT began partly as an effort by Southern Pacific RR in the Seventies to piggyback consumer long distance on its internal comms network). A few years ago CBRE started a unit meant to generate new income by uncovering forgotten leases sitting in dusty vaults and safes. Not sure how that has developed.
