Trying to determine my keepers. The top 5 seem pretty locked in. I hate use a 4th rounder on a keeper, but I think that's still pretty good value for Alonso. I was leaning toward rounding out my keepers with Garcia, but that would mean I'm keeping all hitters, and finding an OF is easier than an SP. Garcia is a tremendous value at that pick, though. He finished ranked 47th in our league last year. Keeping an SP like Burnes, Giolito or Kopech means counting on one of them to have a bounce back year, and choosing the correct one. Seems riskier than Garcia.

    Top 5
    C - Rutschman 15th
    OF - Acuna 13th
    DH - Ohtani 11th
    3B - Bregman 12th
    1B - Alonso 4th

    Other options
    OF - Adolis Garcia 23rd
    SP - Burnes 21st
    SP - Giolito 18th
    SP - Kopech 19th
    SP - Severino 15th
    SP Drey Jameson 25th
Oswald Peraza (NYY - SS) Round 25
    Gavin Lux (LAD - 2B,OF) Round 21
    Eugenio Suárez (SEA - 3B) Round 15
    Gleyber Torres (NYY - 2B) Round 6
    Brandon Drury (LAA - 1B,2B,3B) Round 25
Jhoan Duran (MIN - RP) Round 25
Kendall Graveman (CWS - RP) Round 19
    Ross Stripling (SF - SP,RP) Round 25
Félix Bautista (BAL - RP) Round 25
Anthony Bass (TOR - RP) Round 25

I'm confused. Corbin Burnes has to bounce back after what he did in 2022?

One of my keeper leagues fills out the starting roster with a slow auction that takes most of February. Players become available in groups every few days. Once a bid is unchallenged for 24 hours, it goes final. We finished Saturday. My pitching is strong, but my outfield was already weak enough that I would have had to start Lux out there. Now it looks like he blew out his knee. Oh, but I love the game so...

Bounce back is the wrong phrase as it relates to Burnes, but the last 2.5 months, when he had an ERA around 4.00, and those worrisome 23 HRs definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. That said, looking back, he obviously was better than I was remembering. Looks like he's my sixth guy. I like Garcia, but he's more easily replaced than 240 Ks.

I was wondering if I was missing something. To me, Burnes would be an easy decision if his cost was 10 rounds higher, a no brainer at 21.

Yeah, I literally forgot how dominant he was from April through the end of July.

That said, the question I now face, is am I buying too much into the Rutschman hype by keeping him 15th, rather than Garcia in the 23rd? Garcia strikes out way too much and, by extension, his OBP sucks, but he swipes plenty of bags and has excellent power/RBI totals out of a late-round pick.

Rutschman might give me great production at a position bereft of it, but if your catcher sucks, you're generally in the same boat as nine other managers.

Seems like this is going to be a good year to target guys with high contact and hard-hit rates. Banning the shift seems like it could be a boon to guys who constantly hit the ball hard and put it in play.

Now I'm starting to get into the weeds on this. Giolito suddenly looks more interesting when you see that his hard-hit rate (39%), his HR rate (3.4%), walk rate (8.7%), GB/FB rate (0.63), and exit velocity (88.5) were all within his career norms. Then you look at his BABIP (.340) and it's 60 points higher than his career average. It wouldn't be too surprising if he does bounce back.

Sounds like you are making yourself a little crazy, which is what I usually do, too. :)

To me, that logic is exactly why a quality catcher is so valuable. It is because they give you an advantage.

I'm missing some variables here. How much would the cost of those players go up for 2024? Also, what are the offensive categories? In an OBP league, I'd be a lot less inclined to hang on to Garcia.

Yeah, ours is OBP as well, along with R, RBI, HR, SB, TB and Ks. Each player costs two rounds each season, much like our SJ league. So Adley will be a 13th-rounder next year.

I'm biased on this one, but I would keep Rutschman, especially with strikeouts as a category. Garcia would hurt you both in OBP and strikeouts.

Musgrove breaks big toe while working out

Does anybody want a broken fantasy baseball team? Yordan Alvarez is having hand problems again. Gavin Lux probably tore his ACL yesterday. Now Musgrove is out indefinitely with a broken toe. WTF?!
