Wentz does have a Cam Newton feel to him.

I think teams make mistakes on QBs on a couple of fronts - they don't want to admit how lousy the team around the QB is, particularly the line - and the coaching/offense for some odd reason makes the QB adjust to the system - which is "sacrosanct" and not adjust the offense to the player. The third one is a QB who has always been surrounded with a talent advantage in HS and college struggles when he is playing with a team with a talent disadvantage - and he can't handle the adversity. scouI'm always surprised how little the third one is factored into the scouting analysis.

There's a host of other factors that've gone into his performance with New England, but the offense Mac Jones had in his one year as Alabama's starter was probably more talented than the one he's in now.

This talk about Wentz forces me to remind some of you how bad the quarterback play is in the NFL.

The Saints still believe Taysom Hill could be a quarterback as of last season. The Seahawks are going to pay Geno Smith north of $35M/year. The Jets played Chris Streveler in half of a game that was basically their last hope at making the playoffs. The Dolphins started Skylar Thompson in a playoff game.

The Bucs, who only have Kyle Trask under contract, should eagerly offer Wentz some incentive-laden deal. There are a lot of fucking bad quarterbacks in the NFL.

You're not wrong. But you can't pay Wentz north of $25 million for sub-Heinicke level play.

Wentz's next contract is going to be base-level high-end backup money with a lot of incentives. Forget him reaching the production he had in 2017-2019 with the Eagles, probably not happening.

But if you look at his numbers from his one year with the Colts, at least half the league would gladly take a QB with those numbers and take the chances on getting to 10 wins. Yeah he was horrible in a must-win game in Indianapolis, but Ryan Fitzpatrick was fucking awful in every game his team needed to win in his career and he stayed in the league until he was damn near 40.

Wentz will probably never be a top 10 QB in the NFL again, but he isn't Zach Wilson either.

Especially when you can actually sign Heinicke for a third of the cost

Remember when the Vikings made the playoffs and had to choose between Christian Ponder or Joe Webb as their starter? I bet @Machine Head remembers! :D

You're certainly right Wentz will get another opportunity if he wants it. It's not like he did something like kneel for the anthem. But he's terrible and a team like the Bucs (just as one example for a bad team needing a bridge QB) is probably just delaying the inevitable by signing a guy who can go 6-11. Better to go 1-16 with Kyle Trask and get the no. 1 pick in 2024.

Bucs might go 1-16 either way, they are a cap mess. Like $60M over.

But honestly, USF football might sell more tickets if the Bucs run Kyle Trask out there.

Good. The world needs the normalcy of a bad Bucs team.

Is Carson Wentz gonna sell tickets, though? COME WATCH THE GUY WHO'S BEEN RUN OUT BY THREE TEAMS IN THREE YEARS AND IS HATED BY EVERYONE LEAD US TO THE NO. 10 PICK!

I think I classified him as a bottom-third QB at this point. I think it largely depends on what kind of role and money he's willing to accept. If he's OK with being a backup and signing an incentive laden deal that offers him cash if he's pressed into duty, sure, he could end up with a good team. But if he wants to definitely be a starter, or have a legit shot at the starter job, he's looking at the rebuilding or fringe playoff teams looking for a stopgap.
