Detroit's Antoine Davis scores 38 tonight in a win over IUPUI in the Horizon League tournament. He has 3,642 career points and now trails Pete Maravich (3,667) by 25 heading into a Thursday quarterfinal at Youngstown State.

Kansas is wearing red??? Ugh, I hate merchandising. The fact that you can't turn on a game (basketball, in particular) and tell what teams are playing without looking at the score bug is insane to me.

And playing Texas Tech, which should be in red on the road, to boot so it's like doing a triple take.

Seriously. I saw the Jayhawk on the floor and thought Kansas was wearing white. Took me a possession or two before I noticed they were in red.

I don't even mind different uniforms every season, necessarily, but it seems like a school's brand is really closely associated with their main colors. The unis should at least play off the school's color scheme. The Jayhawks wearing red in a home game seems like it should be heresy.

Van Pelt just called out Kansas for the uniforms and it made me happy.

Davis seems like a nice guy so I'll just bitch about this here instead of on Twitter, but the dude needed five years and (I believe) more 3-pointers than anyone's ever made in college history to have a shot at breaking the record Pistol Pete set in three years w/o the benefit of a 3-point line. If Davis breaks the record, there should be an asterisk next to it that can be seen from Pluto.

Bubble results of note from Tuesday ...
    * Not like Iowa was in real trouble but thumping the Hoosiers by 22 at Assembly Hall should remove any doubt.
    * Boise State is very much secure now after beating San Diego State at home.
    * VCU wrapped up the A-10 regular season by sweeping Saint Louis. The Rams now have a Q1 win as well thanks to Dayton winning last night to jump into the top 75 of the NET. Looks like VCU will avoid any potential Dayton matchup until the A-10 final, if they get there.
    * Mississippi State keeps hope alive by TCOB against South Carolina at home. Bulldogs could really use another nice win, and Vandy on Saturday is a Q2 opportunity on the road.

    Today...
    * Pitt at Notre Dame. I don't care where Pitt is in the NET. If they get to 15 freaking ACC wins and are playing for the ACC regular-season title at Miami on Saturday, the Panthers are comfortably in.
    * Missouri at LSU. Must-win for Mizzou, which is right around the margins in NET (49) and cannot afford a Q3 loss.
    * Utah State at UNLV. The Aggies are 30 in NET but seemingly are on the outside looking in on most prognostications. No Q1 wins and two rough losses (Weber State at home, SMU in Hawaii). It probably behooves USU to sweep its last two MWC games (tonight and at home against Boise).

I think having VCU on the bubble is pretty charitable, unless you mean the NIT bubble. I don't think they have enough left on their schedule to jump roughly 30 teams to get into the 30s or 40s. Unfortunately, the A-10 definitely seems like a one-bid league this year.

Tennessee point guard goes down Hendon Hooker style. Oh, well. It's March, so not much to look forward to anyway.

Back when Mike Davis coached UAB, I had job flexibility that allowed me to catch practices fairly often. I used to see Antoine and A.J. Oliver, the son of UAB women's basketball coach Audra Smith, running around Bartow Arena, playing one on one and taking endless shots. A.J. is also playing for Detroit Mercy. They were just coach's kids, I didn't pay much attention.

Antoine may beat Maravich's record, but Pete set it in 83 games across three seasons, while Davis has played 143 games across five years, with the advantage of the three point shot as well. He started as a freshman, and has been first team All Horizon League all five years, Conference POY the last two years. I understand the accusations of his point total being because his father is the coach, and certainly there is some validity to them. OTOH, Mike Davis says that he does not feel Antoine's numbers are a reflection of Daddyball because for it to be Daddyball he'd have to be starting Antoine over a better player. Shrug. I have no idea of the truth of that, particularly early in his career. Davis having recorded 545 assists makes the argument that he isn't simply jacking up shots on every trip down the court.

Pete Maravich was an incredible talent. Davis may have the numbers but he'll never be as good.
