That’s like four Ragu-sized posts to explain. The really short version is that the Democrats are seen as the black people’s party and only 25 percent of the state is black. Certain more entrenched elements of the Democratic leadership have decided instead of slogging through the hard work of coalition building that they won’t see pay off in their lifetime, they’d rather rule of the pockets of the state they can control (Birmingham, Montgomery and the more rural Black Belt counties that roughly follow the US 80 corridor) and grab whatever spoils are available locally.

The Reply All podcast did a good series on the dysfunction lurking within the ranks of Alabama Democrats, and yeah, it's seemingly how @dixiehack lays it out.

Things have gone backwards since that podcast. Christopher England, the reform-minded party chair, stepped down last year and the old crony faction put another puppet in place, so we’re back to the same old bullshit.

Throw in that over the last ten years or a bit more the AlDems have been run as a personal fiefdom by a couple of people who really didn't much care as long as their asses were kissed and their palms greased. There was a state level revolt that ended when the DNC stepped in and forced new leadership, which has since been muscled out/out maneuvered by the previous machine. It's really bad here. Between the Dems not having the numbers and the R's being entrenched and passing laws and and policy changes that keep things that way, chances to change things at the state level look dim.

I’m guessing that Florida sheriff wasn’t invited to the constitutional sheriff’s meeting.

The Sheriff was pissed off because a couple of Neonazi groups were leaving antisemitic flyers on residential doorsteps in neighborhoods he patrols.

I'll yield to Neut and others in state - but there is always resistance when an entrenched leadership feels working to expand membership would only serve to undermine and dilute their power. Better to have total control over an organization that isn't very potent, than possibly grow to the point where new people decide the old guard needs to go. People that don't show up at meetings can never vote you out. It is true for all organizations and social structures.
