The key to combating that is to make people much more alert of the possibility than is happening now.

Exactly. Not everyone will discover, or even ever, know that it's fake. They won't.

Not everyone is at the same point or on the same level, regarding a lot of things, including intelligence, exposure, experience, interest, tech savvy, personality/inclination, privilege/poverty levels, beliefs, or any combination of any of all that -- whatever it takes to become as knowledgeable and informed and updated on things as anybody/everybody else.

This is all even what has already caused much of the current political division going on in our country.

I think all of us here are pretty well-informed, and there is still stuff that slips through the radar for each of us. No matter how much you follow this stuff, it's exhausting to read something and then have to read five more stories before you can feel like it's true.

Speaking of not quite knowing what to believe ...
A group rode into a village in Bryansk, on the Russian side of the border, and caused some mayhem. They took some videos and shot a family in a car.
The Russians are saying it was Ukrainian saboteurs. Ukraine denies it. The truth appears to be something along the lines of it's a group calling themselves the "Russian Volunteer Corps" who are anti-Putin but not necessarily fighting for Ukraine and possibly operating on their own.
So it kind of sounds like we have a bunch of Russian Rednecks moving us a step closer to World War III.

Putin says Ukrainian group attacks border region, Kyiv denies Russian 'provocation'

Again, her job is to open the Overton window as wide as she can.

Rightwing Republicans rail against US aid for Ukraine: ‘We’ve done enough’

Greene called for US funding to cease immediately, insisting that, while she voted for a resolution to support the Ukrainian people and condemning Russia’s invasion, “we are actually accelerating a war there”.

She added: “We should be promoting peace. Europe should have peace and the United States should do their part. Ukraine is not a Nato member nation and Joe Biden said in the beginning he would not defend Ukraine because they’re not a Nato member nation. It doesn’t make sense and the American people do not support it.”

Nothing we didn't know, but apparently emails have leaked where Putin thought they'd take Ukraine in 3 days, then he'd issue an ultimatum that the West was just going to have to accept an occupation of and no-fly zone over the Baltic States and Poland.

Greene's entire argument hinges on the fact that Ukraine is not a NATO member.

The U.S. is making it so Ukraine can defend itself, and the American people do support that. Biden is doing the U.S. part to support and defend democracy, and the American people support that, as well. Promoting peace" would really include killing or capturing Putin, and I'm pretty certain Americans would support that, too. Would Greene?

    She needs to shut up.

You just know that if Putin was captured, the GQP would be shrieking, “That’s great that Putin was captured; but why hasn’t Biden done anything yet about the southern border?”

    Too late.

She's already done what she set out to do - which is to normalize the idea among mainstream Republican voters that we shouldn't aid Ukraine.

In fact, that idea has already become the default setting for many Republicans in the House.

DeSantis taking the heat (and refusing to answer a pertinent question) when asked how his Ukraine policy would differ from Biden's indicates that what Greene has done is create a horrible hot potato for whoever is the GOP nominee next year. While a nasty piece of work DeSantis is connected enough to planet Earth to realize that most American voters support Ukraine, even at least half of Republicans. So catering to MAGA on this issue is a loser no matter how he slices it.

MAGAs have shown they don’t care what the public thinks. Keeping abortion legal, reducing student loan debt, $35 insulin are all popular with the public; yet the MAGAs vote against it and the voters don’t punish them when it’s election time.

We spent $750 Billion in Iraq and people “supported” that war. The end game is when Russia leaves Ukraine.
