The roster deadline has passed. I think we need to discuss a potential consequence if the deadline is missed in the future. Maybe losing a keeper spot? It really isn't that hard to make the deadline and I don't want to be granting extensions because it isn't fair to those who got it done on time.

We’re all or were journalists, if we missed deadline, our stuff didn’t get published/aired.

As you said, it isn’t hard to make deadline and the entire process takes maybe 15 minutes, at least it did with my roster.

I would vote if you’re late, no keepers unless you let the commissioner know you’d be late for good reason.

I really have been out of it for a long time. I didn't even think of it that way.

The two guys who aren't SJ.com members aren't former journalists, but your point is well-taken.

Never been a journalist here, for the record.

I mean, the deadline was announced weeks earlier and there were reminders.

Since there wasn’t a rule announced regarding consequences beforehand, I would say that if the deadline is missed, you lose two keeper spots for each day that you’re late. Miss one day, you get to keep four. Miss two days, you get to keep two. Miss three days, you don’t get any keepers.

Unless as MTM pointed out, the commissioner was notified in advance of a legitimate reason why the deadline is going to be missed.

Not a journalist either, FTR, but no stranger to deadlines in the business I am in. Baron's right, there were loads of notices about the deadline and my keepers took maybe 15 minutes (we'll see if that has consequences down the line).

So far, this seems like the best idea in the short term. I think it wipes out any unfair advantage the owners might gain by waiting an extra day or two.

I was actually thinking about moving the deadline closer to the draft next year, maybe one week ahead instead of two. Perhaps I could ask for preliminary lists two weeks out, but they can be adjusted until one week before the draft. That way, if someone is late, I just use the preliminary list.

Maybe I'm being too nice. Off with their heads! (That was one of the non-SJ.com owners' responses. I think he was kidding.)

Instead, what about you having owners just email you their lists? That way no one knows who is keeping who, except you (you could make your list public if you're worried about people saying you'd have a competitive advantage). That would usually give no one a major advantage (unless someone were to get hurt) and could help solve the problem. You'd just have to chase down any stragglers and decide what to do if they take too long. Otherwise, could have the draft the day after keepers are due and then penalize people who are late with one to two keepers lost. It could be people forgot, but you did give us plenty of notices. If it's the same people again, then, well, I'd say it's up to you.

People do have the option to email me. Some did. It's not so much seeing other people's lists that is an advantage, at least to my thinking. It is having more time to gather information from Spring Training or if a player gets hurt. For example, I would have liked to wait for a little more news on Kyle Wright's shoulder before making a decision on my list, but I had set a date and stuck to it.

I would always make mine public for the reason you mentioned. I think that is fair.

Right -- but I'm saying require people to only email you. No more posting their keepers here or on Yahoo. I agree with MTM, too. And if you want more time, then maybe consider making the keeper deadline later and then having the draft the day after the deadline.

My current thought is to impose a no-exceptions rule starting with the 2024 season. We can all submit rosters early and change them up to the deadline. That way, if something does come up, you at least have a list turned in. Allowing changes up to the deadline ensures that teams won't be punished for turning in a list early.

I think perhaps we could go with a compromise between what MTM and Baron suggested. Starting in 2024, you lose three keeper spots if you are late. If more than 24 hours pass and the list still isn't in, that team will have no keepers at all. There will be no exceptions, even if it is just five minutes past the deadline. That way, I'm not stuck making a judgment call.

I'm also thinking of putting only a week between the deadline and the draft next time around.

I am keeping the league rules in a Google Doc. Let me know if anybody thinks I missed anything. With the change for late keeper lists and the move to saves+holds next year, the rules would be as follows:
    • Keepers will be due exactly one week before the draft each year. Effective for 2024, teams failing to turn in a roster on time will lose three keeper spots. If they are more than a day late, they will lose the remaining keeper spots. There will be no exceptions.
    • Teams will be permitted and encouraged to turn in a keeper list early. Keeper lists may be submitted on the league thread on SJ.com, via PM, or by email to the commissioner at tampicostogies@yahoo.com. Owners may revise their list up until the deadline, so there is no penalty for submitting it early.
    • Players will cost their owner a draft pick two slots higher than their cost the previous seasons. Undrafted players will cost a 20th-round pick. If you have two players who cost the same round, you may designate the order. If you do not, the commissioner will choose the order for you.
    • Effective for the 2023 season, the league added an NA spot to allow for minor leaguers. That is determined by Yahoo’s designations. Players who are suspended by MLB are not eligible for the NA spot.
    • Effective 2023, the draft will be 26 rounds with an additional roster spot. NA is not a roster spot for the draft. Owners will have to move a player into that position or pick one up after the draft.
    • Effective 2024, saves will be replaced by saves+holds.

I updated the draft order and input the keepers. Please look at the draft results and check that yours are in correctly.

I will clear everybody's roster in a few days, which will allow everyone to see who is available for the draft.
