Yes. "Woke" or "stay woke" has been around for a very long time, particularly in the black community, as short hand for being aware.

It is ridiculous how i'ts been turned into a putative pejorative for all things liberal.

In a way I see this whole argument over the phrase as bearing some similarity to conservatives trying to bait or embarass liberals on gun control over terms like "assault rifle."

In both cases, there is a certain amount of truth to the idea that if we're not talking about the same thing, even though we disagree, how can we find those places where there is common ground. But there's also little good to come from these kinds of gotcha moments. Other than entertainment, and that person beimg flummoxed trying to explain "woke" is entertaining.
