From what I can gather, nobody was even close to Maravich in average ASSISTS per game, either. He averaged 6.2. Next highest person I could find was Jack Bouldin of Mississippi State at 5.0. Alabama assist stats aren't listed. And it seems like scorers were pretty strict in handing out assists. Games sure did sound interesting on the radio, though.

I miss the old tartan surface Tennessee used to play on. And listening to John Ward . . .

He was a finalist for the job when Pitino got it and he was still at the Division II level. This was not a surprising outcome

Growing up in Michigan we would hear about Pistol Pete a day later
All we had was syndicated Big Ten
I didn’t know about Joe Dean and string music until I got to Florida in the 80s

I know a bit about Bryant, given its proximity to URI, the team I actually follow. They had a really disappointing year - Brought in a bunch of well-regarded transfers and finished worse than last year. Earl Timberlake ended up there, and he's turned out to be "merely" very good, not the kind of guy you'd expect for being the #30 overall prospect in 2020. Bryant's coach, Grasso, is an aggressive recruiter but questionable game coach.

Yeah, his teams feel like barely controlled messes and he is super aggressive in every way. Big-time self-promoter who rubs most of his peers the wrong way. He looked like the heir apparent to Cluess at Iona, where being a renegade is a feature and not a bug. But Cluess could rein in questionable kids and coach the ever-loving shit out of the game. Haven't seen enough of Grasso as an in-game coach to know one way or the other, but it feels like they should be further along, even after moving to the Vermont-dominated America East.

What about those awesome Globetrotterish warmups!

As for that tartan surface, we ran drills on it at Johnny Majors' football camp and I was amazed at how squishy it was. I can imagine legs would be worn out after a game on it.

Given how many layups this team misses, I say bring back the drills.

One of our local small private schools had that surface in its gym until finally getting a wood floor around 2015. Near as anyone could remember it had been there since the school was built in the early 1970s. By the time they replaced it, it was worn down to the concrete underneath. A couple of high-traffic spots were painted or still had at least a token layer of surfacing left. A couple of others did not, and you could see the gray slab showing through.

The Vol point guard #10 looks to have all the dribbling skills of a decent 1oth grader of today. But at 5:45 he stops the Cousy dribble and whips a full cross court pass in the corner for an open jumper. Pretty cool.

One of the teams in our conference had a tartan surface. That was ... a while ago. I have no idea if they still have it.
