So based on that interview, which repeatedly says that the statue itself wasn't the issue, and that there are more issues than just the statue...do we believe the school board member? Or the principal?

I'll be honest: I don't agree with that board member on some of the things he said, and I think it's ridiculous that you'd have to send home notification to parents on seeing the statue David. But I don't believe he's lying.

The fact that this art teacher had the gumption to say that we need to send out a letter documents that. But the letter wasn’t sent out. And he didn’t check to make sure that it was sent out.

Wait, so the teacher requested one, but the principal didn’t send it out?

Yes. And he didn’t check. That was an egregious mistake, and we won’t make that mistake again.

Now, while it offends my sensibilities, that a group of people would be so whatever about this statue, the group has a process, it wasn't followed, and here's the byproduct. It could turn out to be that the board gets ousted by parents in response. And maybe that'd be the right conclusion.

But I don't think the board member is lying.

I do think the principal was a bad fit for the school - hell, I'd be a bad fit for the school - and, instead of knowing that and moving on to the 99% of schools where she'd be a great fit, she's going to try and take down the leadership of this school. Is that her right? Yes. Do classical schools fit my idea of good curriculum? They don't - and I know several Christian families who are in classical co-opts (smaller than this school) that, in my opinion, don't produce particularly well-adjusted adults. (Tho many of them are quite good musicians.) Yet situations like these are distillations of why - even unjustifiably - conservatives feel like the world is constantly pressing in when they mostly desire to be left alone.

the interview is interesting, too, in that the reporter doesn’t know what “classical” education is in the context it’s described here - he’s honest enough to admit that - and that he reiterates, several times, that he thinks the statue just isn’t that big of a deal. Which, I agree. But they don’t. And they have a right not to, as well.

I think super strict school dress codes/uniforms are dumb. But some schools have them, and if the principal said “eh, I don’t care what they do” that principal wouldn’t be there long.

Don't sell yourself short: You'd be a bad fit for any school.

A classical education is a liberal arts education. It teaches children HOW to think. ... rather than telling them WHAT they have to learn.

It's an absolute perversion of the concept to say that your school's curriculum provides a "classical education," but your art teacher needs to get individual permission from parents to show students Michaelangelo's David. And btw, we're firing the principal over it.

That got me more than it should have. The way he looks up and his eyes dart around after he says, "Anita Dick." It's so satisfying to the 11 year old in me.
