Much like the party line that "indictments will ensure trump wins the election," I'm unclear who the J6 jail tours are trying to win over. Outside of the cult, they're viewed as criminals who tried to overthrow the government at the command of a failed and mentally ill soon-to-be ex-president.

    These are not sympathetic people.

    I agree with you.

Yet, that's how "classical" is viewed in these circles. And maybe it is a perversion of the concept. So what? I wouldn't be a part of it, and I don't think that former principal did much wrong in my eyes, but if that's what they want to do...why can't they?

I mean, I'm not sure public school kids are shown the David statue well, really for any reason at all, but not in sixth grade art class besides. (I'm sure I'll now be presented with precisely the school doing that). So, in that sense, the whole thing is kind of ridiculous. But, then, people have the right to be ridiculous in this way, don't they?

It's "kind of ridiculous" to you that an art teacher showed 6th graders Michaelangelo's David. ... not ridiculous that this led to someone being fired (well, shit, if the school wants to fire educators because the school board is doing some kind of dark ages kabuki theater, that's their right, isn't it?)

More telling than the particular issue of the statue is the contempt with which the interview subject holds teachers and the infallibility he confers to parents. This is Trumpist education in a nutshell, and it makes education impossible. Which is precisely the point.
If a single parent objects to a particular day's lesson or subject matter, does the topic get shuttered? It sure reads that way.

No. The "ridiculous" is meant to explain that the school created its own problem by using a picture of art that I'm not even sure public school sixth graders learn about. The whole situation is ludicrous. Not showing it all would have been wiser than the ridiculous setup they've created here.

No that's the whole point. We are wasting valuable time and resources on this ridiculousness and upending the kids' education. If you don't see that, you don't see how our country is losing the economic battle to China and other countries. We are riding on borrowed time.

These "classical" education schools predate Trump, I assure you. Though, in this moment, in Florida, perhaps they are entirely Trumpist in nature.

The way this is gonna turn out is that entire board will be gone, and the school itself will be on the ropes.

    I can see that.

    So what should kids learn?

STEM, plus other cultures, plus art.

But hey, I've had enough of this Caucasian-centric art POV, if you want to delete the "great" Renaissance, go ahead.
