I suspect the move is designed to achieve in Arkansas what is already true in Texas: A separate private school title track outside of the UIL - which protects public schools in Texas.

See, kids want to win state titles, and if a private school can aggregate all the talent while keeping its enrollment artificially low, they get the best kids.

If you separate the titles, it makes public school sports more viable. I figure you’d be for that.

The divide in Massachusetts high school sports is between public schools and Catholic schools. The latter tend to dominate football and especially hockey, because they get kids from all over greater Boston rather than a specific city or town. But it has never been so unequal as to lead to demand to separate the two in state competition. The prep-private schools are separate, which is a good thing, because colleges send players to them for an extra year to get their academics in order, especially to the big ones, so it's likely schools like Andover, Exeter and Deerfield would win everything.

One, Arkansas doesn't have enough private schools in the state for them to have their own divisions - especially in football. (And private schools that win a state title are required to play in a higher classification in the next reclassification cycle.)

Two, the state senator's bill would retroactively award state championships to public schools beaten by private schools. So whichever school lost the Class B title to Harding Academy in 1976 will get a trophy in 2023.

Three, this is part of a larger move against the independence of the Arkansas Athletics Association.

But thanks for your analysis of high school sports politics in Arkansas from X miles removed from The Natural State.

I'd like to see the Meidas Touch guy keep his videos to 6-7 minutes but otherwise his summation re: Trump indictment is pretty good:

" ... this is who the MAGA Republican party is, kind of weak weird traitors … and I don't know how else to to say it ... they don't believe in Law and Order at all ... they make songs with January 6 terrorists ... they call it the j6 choir and they pledge allegiance to the J6 choir ... not even the Pledge of Allegiance or the national anthem ... no they pledge allegiance to some wacko song in Waco by the J-6th Choir which is just utterly utterly disgusting and absurd ... and you see there on Fox you know it's a race to the bottom of the depths of depravity ... and it's frankly up to all of us in the pro-democracy community to do something about it … we can't be exhausted anymore ... we have to stand up for this great democracy and not let these traitors ... not let these fascists exhaust us ... we are a country of Law and Order and we love this country ... we love our Constitution and we show that with our conduct each and every day and we reject that performative fascist nonsense."

Today would be an excellent day for a newsdump.

Aliens. A congressional aide missing. A Mariah Carey soundtrack to “Glitter II.” You name it.

This trial is going to make OJ’s look civilized and dignified.

    I’m dreading and anticipating it.
