Because we refuse to do anything about one of our biggest, most disturbing issues.

Worth remembering one of the primary reasons cops are so frightened and so often overreact:

too many crooks with too many guns.

Fewer guns = less gun violence.

I couldn't like your post, because I do not like guns, gun violence or police officers (or any public servant) being gunned down.
But you hit the nail on the head with that one.
Because of our loose (non-existant) gun and ammunition laws, self-preservation has forced many cops into a kill-or-be-killed mindset.
And that won't change until the laws do. Even then, it will take a generation or more of police officers to reform that mindset.

Doesn't this apply to everyone, though?

Isn't "Fewer guns = less gun violence" the nail that anyone supporting tougher gun laws has been banging like a drum for the past 10, 20 years, at least? It's not just the police, and it wouldn't be just for the police.

And no, nothing will change until the laws do. So, why haven't they? Oh, right, because that'd be harder than just keeping on doing what we're doing, any more lives lost be damned. I really do wonder what it's going to take to get the NRA out of people's back pockets, and vice versa.

I know if I didn’t have to be reminded two or three times out of the year that I might have to give my life to save a student I would be the happiest person.

When you aren’t indoctrinating them, that is.

I went on a rant last year about something I was teaching and how they needed to pay attention because in Florida, I would be fired for telling them about Plessy. Forgot there was a kid who had moved from Florida a couple weeks prior. Never got the chance to find out what he thought of that comment though I did feel bad.
