2005 was the last year that both the Capitals and Penguins missed the playoffs.

Interesting that now that Washington/Pittsburgh missed this year, the longest playoff streak is Boston’s, of just seven years.

Sportsnet up here has it as the Leafs and Bruins with seven, but they’re obviously counting the 2020 play-in round (which the Leafs didn’t get out of) as a playoff round, which they shouldn’t.

Ever since they got swept by Columbus, Tampa has been far too eager to fight.

    The era ends … officially.

I think, but could be wrong, that Toronto is considered a playoff team in '20 (even though they lost in the QR) b/c they were a top-8 team when the season ended. I'd consider anyone who made it to the QR that year a playoff team. A one-year (hopefully) hiccup of a format, etc.

They’ve also been to 3 finals since then winning 2. Whatever they changed has worked.

Fair enough, and I realize I’m likely splitting hairs. But I think I remember the league waited until after the qualifiers were over to paint “Stanley Cup Playoffs” on the ice. But you’re right, they would have been a playoff team when the season ended.

Granted I may be influenced by the very strident voices and the fact that I hated the Blackhawks long before that, but it would be nice if someone in Chicago takes time out from their Toews hagiography to at least mention Kyle Beach and Toews' remarkable 'see no evil' form of leadership in that regard.

I may be influenced, too. I can't stand Toews either and was thinking the same thing yesterday.

My sense has always been that Toews (and Patrick Kane) are. ... well, scumbags. I'm sure there are a lot of scumbags in the NHL who I don't spend a lot of time thinking about the same way, but something about those two has just always rubbed me wrong. I'm not even that interested in speculating about what they knew about (and may not have done about) Kyle Beach, or about anything else about various allegations about things that have come up, with Kane at least. It's more just my sense about them always. I look at either of them, and I just want to take a shower.

Now. ... Kane is on the team I root for, and it has bugged the living hell out of me. I didn't want the Rangers to do it. Now that he's here, I want him to play well. ... but I will be glad when free agency comes after this season and he's gone. It worries me that there is probably a 2 percent chance that he'll be back; the Rangers don't have the cap room, but out of Kane and Tarasenko (who is way better at this point), Kane would be the one who might work for below market value to play for a team he thinks might win a cup. I am keeping my fingers crossed that he just moves on and takes his smug face somewhere else.

I don’t know. Toews was 21/22 at the time. The fact somebody made him captain doesn’t automatically mean he’s equipped to deal with that situation the way people think a captain should have.

With the Penguins ending the season by losing to Chicago and Columbus, Anaheim has slid under both and now is in pole position for the Connor Bedard Derby, aka the draft lottery on May 8

I never though Toews was a scumbag like I thought Kane was at the time, but silence is complicity. If anything Toews is kind of the ultimate "hockey guy." White, North American, has never said anything interesting to a media member in his life. And if they put the C on you, I think the responsibility is the same regardless of your age.
