Southern Democrats like Eastman, Thurmond, Stennis, Russell, Byrd and others held a disproportionate amount of power because they had decades of seniority and chaired important Senate committees that became their own personal fiefdoms. They could block any legislation they wanted, at any time. Only a master like LBJ was able to break their stranglehold and manage to get civil rights and voting rights legislation out of committee.

The two great legislative achievements of the last 60 years:
    • civil rights legislation
    • Obamacare
If you're of a certain persuasion, I'd suppose you'd add tax, Social Security, and/or welfare reform.

More than 60 years ago, but the GI bill might be the greatest single piece of legislation ever passed in this country.

His lack of self awareness is astounding and in today’s politics is probably a strength. Only someone that myopic could fail to see how he appeals to no one.

The ideal situation would be for DiFi to step down and Newsom to appoint someone who is NOT running for the office to keep the seat warm until 2024, say, Barbara Boxer OR Leon Panetta.

This all started when Rep. Ro Khanna called for Feinstein to resign. Conveniently, he's the co-chair of the Senate campaign of Rep. Barbara Lee, who is in the Senate race. Convenient in that Newsom has said he would appoint a Black woman to the seat if Feinstein retires early.

Newsom pledges to appoint a Black woman to replace Feinstein if she retires

She'd never do it but Harris would have much more impact in the Senate than as Veep. And a longer political career.

Not a billion years does that happen. She has her eye on only one other job.
