Since I got out of the business several years ago, I rarely wander over to these parts. However, I have to pass on news of the death of an sj.com institution — especially for many on the board in NASCAR and ACC country.

I crossed paths with Tucker McLaughlin several times back in the day. One that sticks out is when he wanted me to cover a high school football game so he could attend a Buschwide race at Richmond. “But Tucker, I have to cover three games in my area.” “Oh, don’t worry about that. You don’t go to press until Tuesday. You can talk to the coaches afterwards.” He did that another time when he went to cover a Duke/UNC game. I think he really wanted to tell me that he was going to that game.

I had the fortune of talking with him at a watering hole in South Boston several times after I left the business. He was the same away from press row as he was at it —boisterous and with a story to tell.

He did it his way, and got his small twice-weekly into many places reserved for the big boys. Well done, Tucker. You will be missed.

I don’t think so, but he was referenced on multiple occasions.

Ah man ... remember Tucker from both my NASCAR days and all the times I was doing the ACC tournaments in Greensboro ...

Tucker was a peach. I was the entertained bystander in a Lane Stadium parking lot when he and Doug Doughty were debating just how many pieces of Bojangles Tucker had in one sitting.
They broke the mold when they made Tucker.
