This happened in my section of Kansas City (the Northland), in a neighborhood I sometimes pass through ... in fact, I drove through earlier in the week.

Unfortunately, it's also part of the city that is redder in gun ownership and voting patterns. It's hard not to be surprised that an 80-year-old white guy in an older, whiter subdivision could decide to shoot a black kid at 10:30 at night as a knee-jerk reaction. Sickening.

That he's a stellar student at the nearby, affluent public high school hurts the narrative alt-right Twitter, etc. is grasping for. Doesn't mean they won't try.

    Just 29 kinds of heartbreaking.

But the idea you'd shoot a kid in the head - through the door - is just outrageous to me.

    And then shoot him again.

And then the cops don't arrest and hold the shooter? C'mon.

As you say, I'm sure local responsible gun owners will try to swiftboat this poor kid, too.

Please let me know if there's some way I can help.

Can't wait for Fox News and OAN and others to claim their boy was standing his ground by shooting a black kid in the head.
Remember, children: Both sides are extreme; all extremes are absurdities; and all extremes are therefore equal.

Things we still don’t know, even as the number of wounded stands at 32:

    • How many shots were fired
    • How many shooters (no high-powered rifle shells were found - apparently this was all handguns)
    • The names of any suspects
    • The potential cause

It's a miracle this doesn't happen with deliveries more often, then I realized the demographic doing the shooting isn't ordering on amazon

No kidding; you're right on all counts. This whole thing is so sickening, it's hard to even know what to say.

Still, I've tried to think about it, and, even more than terrible evidence of guns and gun-rights problems/issues in this country, it is a testament to fear. That is, generally speaking, and not considering whether or not this shooter is just a raging racist, I could see him acting in fear in this situation. Does anybody like unexpectedly getting someone knocking on their door at 10:30 at night? What's people's first reaction? Fear.

People simply don't trust each other these days, about anything, or in any situation. No one gets any benefit of doubt, and people are just shooting first and asking questions later. That's almost certainly what this guy did.

That said, and that benefit of doubt given, the fact that he shot through his door, twice, apparently without letting the kid explain why he was there, is damning, and horrible. And how the shooter is not in jail seems inexplicable.

Who is sitting on their porch with a gun at 1030 at night and just looking for an excuse to squeeze a few off. I’m guessing they’ll come back with the answer of “drunk, angry redneck.”

How did the kid in KC land there? Given wrong address? Not paying attention? I once came back from a night of drinking in NYC and decided to surprise my then gf and now wife. I got a cab to her place and in the darkness of after midnight and my inebriation, I went to her neighbor’s door and knocked. A man answered, which got my jealous juices going, immediately assuming she was cheating on me. I started kicking the door and banging loudly and demanding she come outside, while also telling this guy to come out so I could kick his ass. Instead of saying, “She doesn’t live her, you got the wrong address,” the guy says through the door, “You need to leave.” Eventually he called the cops, my gf heard the commotion and came outside just as the cops arrived, vouching for me. The cops just gave me a warning. Meanwhile, the neighbor had a wife and young son, who the father said on the condo comment board —- in a detailed account of the incident — that his son was traumatized. I have no defense, it was a low moment and I was fully expecting my gf to dump me. Instead she said she understood and oddly appreciated how worked up I got thinking she had stepped out on me. We’d been dating for three or four years then.

Anyway, that is an instance where I’m lucky the guy didn’t have a gun bc he woulda been damn justified in plugging my ass.

    Arrested, at least.

84-Year-Old Is Charged in Shooting of Black Teenager Who Went to Wrong House

but jesus christ please, what's wrong with people:

The white man who answered the door there shot him in the head and again in the arm after he fell, according to prosecutors. Somehow, Ralph made his way, bleeding, to another nearby house. There, he was told to lie on the ground while someone called for help, his family said.

I mentioned it on the racism thread. But I guess it should go here too. I wonder if dementia played a role in the KC shooting. My grandfather would sundown hard at that age and was convinced people were trying to steal from him. Even shot a tree because he thought it was a burglar.

It sucked. We thought we had taken all his firearms. But he had a .380 we didn’t know about. The cops were very helpful.

Unfortunately, as more boomers hit their 80s, it might become a bigger problem.
