If you weren't around to listen to radio then, that song was a massive out-of-nowhere hit and you couldn't seem to get away from it during the summer of 1966. Then mental health groups started to complain and it basically disappeared except for the Dr. Demento Show.

 

Had to love the music video.

 

On the WKNR music guide it went from something like 27 to 2 in a week
It was banned the next week

 

I think Dr. Demento played it every week. I listened on Sunday nights.
