    Taj is the man.

As great as the Allman's version of "Statesboro Blues" is it's worth noting they stole every note from Taj's version with the late, great Jesse Ed Davis on slide.

It wasn't going to take much for me to like anything new the reunited Gaslight Anthem put out. I'm pretty easy. That said, I like it and really looking forward to seeing them in a club again in two weeks.

Brian Fallon says the new song is essentially an ode to their audience, to themselves and finding joy in the music again. I think you can hear it in Brian's voice, especially in the hook:

I wanna live, I wanna love you a little longer
I was invincible many years ago when I was so much stronger
I wanna smile like a letter from an old friend
    My arms are open oceans
How I've missed you, and feelin' good to be alive

If you're gonna steal, steal from the best. And yes, Jesse Ed was the effin' man. Have you seen "Rumble", the documentary on Native Americans in rock? Link Wray, Jesse Ed, Redbone, and more. Pretty good. Streaming on Netflix last time I looked. It's got Jackson Browne telling the story about Jesse nailing the awesome guitar solo on "Doctor My Eyes" He listened to the track twice, recorded the solo, and left. Boom.

Jesse Ed and Ry Cooder are both on Taj's first record, though Ry was still a teenager and was backing Jesse. Ry and Taj released an album of Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee songs last year that's pretty damn strong. Taj and Ry were in a band together when they were both just kids.

I haven't seen it but have it noted to check out on Netflix (last I checked it was still available here in Canuckistan).

Another slide guitar giant, the late, great David Lindley puts his own spin on Jesse Ed's solo here:

Flip Wilson talked about Ruthie Foster in the concerts thread. Here's a video of her solo with a live audience.

Loved Lindley. I got to catch him solo about twenty years ago. Jackson Browne's band was so good. I loved Rosemary Butler's background singing as well.

Never saw Lindley, unfortunately, but one of my all-time fave players. Seems if it had strings he could play it.

    Appetite for Destruction.

I will defend that statement this way:
I was punk/post-punk/alternative and I realized what a great album that was.

And how screwed up everything became is just more evidence of the genius of that group of people. Izzy Stradlin is the man behind the curtain.

Of course, the new Isbell songs (especially "Cast Iron Skillet") are on repeat. But today I'm digging the new Billy Strings/Willie Nelson song.
