I know he had the active record for mounts, but was Castellano regarded as the best jockey never to win the Derby? Seems like he should be the overwhelming story here. Is there a comparable recent Derby win from a jockey who lacked the big one?

Like many others I’m a Secretariat buff, read all the books and in my collection of stuff even have the TIME magazine cover. A couple of years ago I picked up this picture of ‘one’ of the pictures at the Belmont and took a closeup of his muzzle. You can see the sweat and saliva around the mouth as he kind of looks at the camera.
Very sad to read about the deaths.

 

Turcotte never went to the whip in the Triple Crown, or so I've heard. Saw it but don't recall.

When are we going to be done with racing animals for sport? It’s mostly just for people to either wear stupid hats or because it was the only legal thing people could bet on forever.

I covered the Derby three times in my 20s and, each time, it felt scummier than the last.

People can now wear stupid hats and make TikTok videos.

Many people in the US (sadly not me) live in legal places where they can place any of 20,000 sports wagers every day except for Christmas and the day before or after the MLB ASG.
