If you'd like, I'd be more than happy to round up some juicier Tweets of the "not conservative" ilk.

Wait ... no I wouldn't. Doing so would piss me off about as much as these "Samaritan" ones.

Homeless have flat out ruined the LA metro system. It's a fucking shame, billions of dollars wasted on sometimes deserted trains, because sane people don't want to subject themselves to the crazy/shit yourself/drugged out. My sympathy meter is super low for homeless who ruin the quality of life for hardworking ordinary people.

I’m so glad none of this shit happens on the DC Metro. The worst I’ve seen here is a drunk guy passed out and drooling on himself.

The operators and the system itself are a much bigger threat to public safety. I’d worry much more about being derailed or getting stuck in a tunnel for hours on end than getting accosted
    by ornery homeless people.

Trying to be circumspect here. I spent the first few years right out of uni working in baby psych programs. The population ranged in age from four to seventeen. As part of that clinical area, I was required to get training in whatever were the popular tools of the day, ie. U of CHI Reality Tx Talk Intervention, Princeton Ergonomic Takedown, and so on.

Having said all of that, there are two things that come to mind.

1.) I am not a Marine and do not play one on the internet. The takedown class I took was attended by members of MNPD, some of whom would be involved with situations at various peds/ado units. When it was all hands, we knew what to do and what not to do. One of the things we did not do because we were trained to not do it was put our hands anywhere near a person's neck.

2.) To people who are not clinicians, mentally ill people, especially schizophrenic folks who are cycling off their meds can be scary. As much as it pains me to say it, some of them can be dangerous. I hate it because the majority are not and incidents like this make it harder for people to seek help. Getting up and walking away can set a person off. Sitting still and avoiding eye contact can set a person off. There is no magic action that can absolutely keep someone enclosed in a tin can hurtling under or over the city safe except the stupid luck of finding someone who knows what they're doing and who is willing to risk attempting to restrain a person who has escalated to a point where the situation has been reduced to a prey/predator dynamic.

Honestly, I don't know how I should feel about this.

It plays into the narrative that cities are crime ravaged hellholes because of unruly black people and DAs who are soft on crime. And, whatever the actual facts of this matter, a white hero killing someone is always justified.

The next time a drugged-out homeless person mugs somebody, cracks their skull, throws them on the subway tracks or shits on the sidewalk, and the citizenry walks past without blinking an eye, will Mr. Zimmer opine about why no one said or did something to stop it? Or will he wax poetic about how the thrill of danger is a great part of city life?

You can be sympathetic toward the homeless. You can try to get them help and assistance, whether it's to treat substance abuse or mental health issues. Those are much bigger issues, though, and probably not likely to be the solution if an insane methhead sets his sights on you. And, frankly, none of them matter in that moment. What matters is either escaping from or dealing with a dangerous situation. The former is always preferable. The latter might sometimes be unavoidable. Like @OscarMadison said, at some point it truly becomes a predator/prey dynamic and the prey has only a few options.
There is a mighty big leap between "openly and aggressively embracing vigilante violence" and acknowledging we should have the right to defend ourselves or others from great harm.

The part I posted was Zimmer showing a conservative dropping a “these people” about homeless folks and people in suits. That ain’t a dog whistle, that’s a foghorn you can hear miles away.

Also, defending yourself from an unarmed person can be done without choking the life out of him.
