Well, I'm pretty darn liberal and I have serious questions about why this case is being brought. I'm sure there's more information to come out, and maybe we'll have to wait for trial to hear it, but from what I've seen, the self-defense argument here looks very strong. The police often do not make an immediate arrest in self-defense cases. Frankly, their decision not to arrest gives a big clue as to how they evaluated the early evidence. Doesn't mean their initial evaluation was right. Just gives us a clue how they viewed it.

Anyway, I'm not sure where it leaves me that I am liberal, have questions and am hearing that if you aren't all "Rah-rah, throw Daniel Penny in jail for life" that you're Team MAGA or something.

Yeah, if you’re into massive overreaction and broad brush painting. Like, all conservatives are Nazis.

Once it became politicized, it turned into a giant cartoonish shitshow, just like everything else.

Unpopular opinion alert - the manslaughter charge should be brought against the government entity that let someone as known and in need of serious care of Neely find his way into a deadly confrontation.

Instead of being an actual black man getting choked to death for committing no crime, he should have been a hypothetical state legislator who could hypothetically have constituents saying mean things in front of her house. Then he could have been more … umm … relatable to some posters here.

There are too many unanswered questions. A man killed another man. That can’t be a “take his word for it” situation.

How big a threat was he? Why did the chokehold go on so long when a former Marine would very likely know the consequences? What do the other two people who held him down have to say? What about other witnesses? The subway has an increased law enforcement presence. How long did it take the cops to get there and/or why did it take so long?

Those all need to be answered. Without a charge/investigation that doesn’t happen.

Penny is from Long Island and (presumably) has ridden the subway frequently. Was this incident way different than ones he and other New Yorkers have seen before? Did he overreact? Or was it clearly a life-threatening situation?

There are way too many unknowns to let this drop.
