MLB Hall of Fame Spink Award winner Ross Newhan's son David, a former MLB'er, is coaching his son in a CIF San Diego Section final tonight.

Commentary from Mrs. Coco, a longtime non-baseball fan:

“Pirates vs. Mariners? Sounds like a real life rivalry.”

“Of course the Mariners are winning today — they’re not wearing those awful black pants.”

She has a point … I believe the M’s are 0-2 in their new “city connect” styled home unis.

The ownership and its hireling management of the Oakland Athletics are throwing games in pursuit of profit to be given by the state of Nevada. How's that different from the Black Sox. They ought to be banned from the sport for life. Of course that won't happen, because owners can be crooked as they want and nobody says boo. Manfred's on the crooks' side.

One somewhat relevant fact: The A's have played half of their AL West games in first third of the overall schedule. After the Astros finish their series on Sunday, nobody in the division gets to feast upon them until Houston plays Oakland starting on July 20.

Pro sports leagues so rarely hold owners accountable. I'm not sure why anybody would expect it in this case.

The 1915 Philadelphia A's were 36-117-1. The 1919 A's were 36-104. So this year's A's might not even be the worst team in franchise history.

If this is true, it may be the most Cubs thing ever.

I never would have guessed the Cubs have the worst record in the NL. But they do, albeit by just percentage points over the Rockies (.431-.434, which is for all intents and purposes a tie). But they have a positive run differential and are 4 1/2 games out of first in the dogass Central (which is only the second-worst Central division this season).

The only reason the AL Central- leading Twins remain (barely) above .500 is they’ve played a bunch of games against the Royals and White Sox, who are competing for the title of Worst Team in Baseball, non-Oakland division.
