That was a helluva in-car shot.

Over the fence. On the replay, you could see people in the stands ducking as the tire continued through the air.

Not as bad as the engine block at Daytona or Bobby Allison's entire vehicle in Talladega, but still unsettling ... and probably why Roger and a team of attorneys continue to leave the warning on the ticket in Indianapolis.

Just think about how much worse it could have been years ago prior to the halos and SAFER barriers.

Zak Brown is in Indy instead of Monaco? Interesting.

Watched that with my 5 year old, who thinks Pato O'Ward is the greatest driver ever, sitting next to me. Even though I knew Kirkwood would come out of the car, watching the in-car footage I kept feeling like we were about to see the end of his life.

Also, I contemplated turning the race off when the tire got air born until we could find out if everyone was OK. I am feeling like a major parenting fail for letting my kid see it all live.

Can you really call yourself "the worldwide leader in sports" when you have no mention on the Indy 500 on your homepage? I realize it isn't their property anymore - but really?

My mind went immediately to the '87 Indy 500 when one of Tony Bettenhausen's tires went into the grandstand and killed a spectator. They beefed up the catch fences quite a bit after that.

They're not the only major outlet to ignore the event. It would take, well, a tire into the stands to get attention outside the bare minimum.

And amazing for that tire to land in that gap between the grandstand and the Turn 2 suites. Heck, it could have kept bouncing onto the driving range of the golf course.

Can the race end under yellow? Nevermind, the red just went up.

More petty crap from the WWL: It matters only when we have the broadcast rights. Then we offer nine different angles on SportsCenter before going to the secondary lede.
