Warren Zevon at his finest ...

    She's so many women
He can't find the one who was his friend
So he's hanging on to half her heart
But he can't have the restless part
So he tells her to hasten down the wind

Someone quoted Jefferson Starship — and it wasn’t me! An upset for sure. Thanks, Cap’n Kirk!

I think we’ve had a thread about best opening lyrics in songs, but here are a few that come to mind:

“If you smile at me, I will understand.
Because that is something everybody, everywhere does in the same language.” — Wooden Ships, CSN/Jefferson Airplane

"Whiskey bottle, brand new car. Oak tree you're in my way" -- That Smell, Lynyrd Skynyrd

"I went home with the waitress, the way I always do. How was I to know? She was with the Russians too." -- Lawyers, Guns and Money, Warren Zevon

"Have you seen her face? She's got a face that would stop a clock. And with that face I surely won't stop. To look her in the eyes." -- He's a Whore, Cheap Trick

An underrated later-era Springsteen tune is "I Wish I Were Blind."

And though the world is filled with the grace and beauty of God's hand
Oh I wish I were blind when I see you with your man

    Days turn to minutes
    And minutes to memories
    Life sweeps away the dreams
    That we have planned
You are young and you are the future
So suck it up and tough it out
And be the best you can

    Success is survival
    We'll all tough it out
Yes, we'll all tough it out.

    Speaking of Seger,

I always think of a summer crush when I hear his music. "She" became a "they" later on. Turn the Page always made me think of them from the sense they were very musical and always had their own style. Later when they came out as trans, the lyrics hit a little deeper.

Well you walk into a restaurant all strung out from the road
And you feel the eyes upon you as you're shakin' off the cold
You pretend it doesn't bother you but you just want to explode
Most times you can't hear 'em talk, other times you can
All the same old cliches, "Is it woman, is it man?"
And you always seem outnumbered so you don't dare make a stand

You might call it sad confusion
You might even call it off
But once you called me more than just your friend
Now there's more to what I'm thinkin'
    Than the Mississippi Line
And Tennessee's not the state I'm in

The Metallica cover is very good and the video makes it great. Such a cool interpretation.

    Canuckistan division:

It’s 40 below and I got a heater in the truck
And I don’t give a fuck, ‘cause I’m off to the rodeo

    I can’t pretend a stranger is a long-awaited friend

Can't or can? I always heard it as the latter.

EDIT: Now that I think about it (and looked it up), "can't" is the right word.
